Im 39 now, and for the first time in my life, Im admitting something thats really tough to say out loud: I genuinely regret not having children. Its not like I never wanted to be a mum, but I was always waiting for the right moment and the right man. For over fifteen years, Id get into relationships thinking, If hes not the one, its not worth bringing a child into all this. So I just let the years slip by, almost without noticing.
My first long-term relationship started when I was 22. We were together for nearly five years, lived together, chatted about marriage, family, the future. But whenever I brought up kids, hed dodge the subject. He kept saying he needed stability first, wanted to travel, save up, live a little. And I went along with it. I convinced myself there was plenty of time. When it ended, I kept repeating to myself, Its better not to have a child in a relationship that just isnt working.
Then, at 29, I got married. I really believed that was the moment. But that marriage lasted less than three years. I discovered hed been cheating, lying, hiding debts from me. I walked away with no kids, no real ties, a feeling of freedombut also this emptiness I couldnt really explain. Again, I told myself Id done the right thing in not having a baby with someone like that.
At 33, I got into another serious relationship. He wanted kids, but not commitment. He just wanted me to fit neatly into his life, his schedule, his way of doing things. When I talked about building a real family, he shrugged and said, When its the right time for the relationship. So I left. Again, I found myself alone, convinced I was making sensible choices.
Now, at 39, I have no children. I dont have a stable partner. Ive got a job, independence, my own place. Still, there are nights I come home to my flat, toss my bag onto the sofa, and the silence just feels crushing. I watch my friends as they talk about schools, homework, vaccines, teenage dramaand I know its not easy, but I see something I dont have: someone who calls them Mum.
Lately, Ive been thinking about something I never let myself consider before: I could have been a single mum. I could have stopped waiting for the perfect man and chosen to be a parent on my own. Built a family differently. But I was so focused on doing everything the right way that, in the end, I didnt do anything at all.
