My granddaughter said something at Sunday dinner that made everyone at the table go quiet.
Wed gathered together for our usual Sunday roast. My daughter, her husband, their two children, and me. It was just an ordinary mealnothing out of the ordinary. We chatted about school, about work, and about summer plans.
At one point, my daughter said something that caught me off guard. She mentioned she was thinking it might be best if we saw each other a little less often. She wasnt rude about it, but she made herself quite clear. She said the kids were growing up and needed to learn some independence. She went on to say that when Im around too much, they end up relying on me for everything.
I just sat and listened. I didnt argue, just nodded.
Right then, my youngest granddaughter, only eight, lifted her head from her plate and asked a question that no one saw coming. She wanted to know why mum didnt want Grandma around.
The table fell silent.
My daughter tried to smile and said it wasnt exactly like that. But the little one pressed on. She explained that when I was there, everyone was calmer. Mum didnt get cross as often. Dad laughed more. The house felt brighter.
No one said a word. My daughter just stared at the table.
It struck me thensometimes grown-ups invent all sorts of reasons. But children see the truth with far more clarity.
After dinner, my daughter came to me and admitted she might have been unfair. She said its easy to forget the importance of someones presence.
I wasnt angry. I simply shared something Ive learned over the yearsthat love doesnt get in the way of a home. Its what makes a house a home.
But even so, I cant help wonderingwhat would you have done if you were in my place?
