At the very start of our relationship, Oliver made it clear: he had no intention of helping with household chores. He declared that earning money and providing for the family was his role, while all domestic duties fell entirely on me. Blinded by love at the time, I agreed to these terms, confident I could handle everything alone.
As the years passed, exhaustion set in. I worked just as much as my husband, yet returning home meant endless responsibilities—cleaning, cooking, laundry, helping the children with homework. Oliver, however, rested after work, believing he’d done his part. Whenever I asked for help, he refused, reminding me of our agreement. In moments of despair, I confided in my sister, Charlotte. She pointed out that I’d known Oliver’s stance from the beginning and accepted it. Charlotte emphasised how difficult it is to change an adult, especially one convinced they’re right.
The arrival of our child strained things further. I’d hoped fatherhood would soften Oliver, but he remained unchanged. All the baby’s care fell to me. He justified himself with fatigue and the importance of his job, insisting financial support was his sole duty. I felt isolated and unheard. Conversations with friends only deepened my frustration—their husbands helped with chores and childcare. I began comparing my life to theirs, and resentment grew.
One day, overwhelmed, I poured my heart out to Oliver. He listened, but his response was predictable: “You knew what you were getting into. I haven’t changed, and I won’t. If you’re unhappy, decide what to do next.” His words cut deep. I realised I’d been hoping for change that would never come.
Now I face a choice: continue in this marriage, clinging to false hope, or gather the courage to make a change. I know I deserve respect and partnership—a man who values my efforts and shares life’s burdens as well as its joys. Every woman has the right to a love built on fairness, not just promises.
