My friend Emily asked me in astonishment, I cant fathom why your parents-in-law left your husband with nothing in the will. And their grandchildren could certainly use some help!
Oh, who can make sense of it? I replied. The youngest son is on his own and already has a three-bedroom flat in Cambridge, and on top of that, two more two-bedroom places. Not to mention a three-storey house in the countryside. Clearly, that still isnt enough for him. His parents gave him all of it! Meanwhile, my husband got left empty-handed.
My wife, Alice, and I have been married for 12 years and have two wonderful children, ages 6 and 10. Alice has always butted heads with my parents; they were forever interfering in our lives, telling us how we should or shouldnt do things. It was bad enough that my mother would nitpick every one of Alices choices and even insisted Alice call her Mum.
I already have a mother, I dont need another one, Alice had once replied, holding her ground against my demanding mother.
The true difficulties began after our eldest daughter was born. My mother, Victoria, started popping round unannounced, expecting to be received with open arms. Alice would simply ignore the knocks and let the phone ring out. Eventually, my mother realised just how overbearing she was being and stopped meddling in our lives.
Alice managed the kids admirably, with the occasional help from her own mum. As the children grew, we moved further away from their paternal grandmother.
My parents were well-off and clever people, always off on holidays, attending West End shows, and dining with friends at fancy restaurants. We barely heard from them, and even for Christmas or birthdays, we’d only find out at the last minute that theyd jetted off somewhere.
Then, out of nowhere, Alice and I learned that my parents had chosen to leave everything to my younger brother. Alice couldnt let it go and rang up my mother to get an explanation.
What exactly did you expect? my mother replied. You wouldnt let me see my grandchildren, and you turned Mark against us. But your brothers always kept in touch! He calls, he visitsso hes getting everything. Its only fair.
Do you think my parents made the right decision?
This whole situation has shown me how tangled and bitter family relationships can become when people forget how far kindness and understanding can go. If nothing else, Im determined to be more present and open with my own childrenso one day, none of us will be left feeling shut out.
