Caught My Husband Cheating

Emily Harper shouted, You even with her! Steve, have you any conscience left?

Steve Miller muttered from beneath the duvet, That doesnt count at all! An exwife is different.

Its not different, Emily replied.

Love you, love, I do, Steve said, but its just a habit

A habit, is it? Emily said, halfdazed.

Can I at least get dressed? the habit seemed to ask.

And you took my favourite silk nightdress too! Emilys anger unfolded piece by piece.

Its a lovely set, Helen Clarke said, Ill buy one for myself.

Take it, Emily snapped, Ill never wear it again!

About the clothing Helen pressed, Im not shy about Steve, but you, dear?

Did you ever feel guilty with another mans? Emily shouted.

Lets keep the shouting down, Helen shook her head, and besides, how can he be another when we were married almost twenty years?

Steve fumbled his underwear, climbed out of bed and, grabbing Emily by the elbow, tried to pull her toward the door.

Lets talk somewhere else!

I wont move until she clears out of my flat, Emily folded her arms. Go, lady, run while I still have any respect for your respectable age!

Girl, dont be cheeky! Im only twelve years older than you, Helen retorted.

Youll hear me calling you grandma soon enough! Emily warned. Off you go! Or do you need a stick, a cane? If youre slow, the A&E will hand you crutches and pray it isnt a wheelchair!

Steve! Helen screamed. Put your wife down!

Emily! Steve beamed, pulling her out of the room.

Better help this old hag disappear, then well talk! Emily snarled.

The scene played out like a dark comedy. Emily watched her husbands futile attempts to shield his exwife from her wrath. Helen, tangled in the sheets, struggled to pull her wardrobe together. When Helen finally stopped flaunting herself, Emily clenched her fists hard enough to hurt, trying not to give the unexpected guest any momentum.

When the front door slammed, Emily growled, Clear her out, Im waiting in the kitchen!

Right, right, coming! Steve chattered, rushing back to the bedroom to strip the sheets.

Now clean up! a voice called from the kitchen.

Of course, Steve panted, catching his breath.

Entering the kitchen, he found Emily in tears, quietly sobbing by the window.

Emily, he said gently.

How could you? she whispered through her tears. How could you be with her? I might have understood if it were someone else, but this this hurts and feels like a betrayal, especially after everything we had. How could you forgive her?

I didnt mean to she called, said our son was in trouble, Steve replied, forcing a crooked smile.

Thats no excuse to drag her into our home! Emily snapped. After what she did to you, Id never have spoken to her again.

Its about the son

You told me the same story yourself, about the debts she left you with! How could you

Emily had never been attracted to men much older than herself. Men a few years her senior were fine, but a fifteenyear gap felt too much. Yet she found herself drawn to Steve, who was fifteen years older, and her heart gave in. In her close circle there was no one else of his age. Work introduced her to various men, but those interactions stayed strictly professional. This encounter was pure chance.

She was driving home after a long day when the dashboard went dark, the steering felt wooden, yet the car kept rolling. Panic rose for a moment, but thank heavens the road was a quiet side street. She managed to pull over, set the handbrake, and step out.

Like any sensible driver, she knew a car might need oil, washer fluid, coolantanything beyond that required a garage. Acting on impulse, she pushed the bonnet open and stared at the engine, bewildered.

Whats wrong with you? she muttered. We were at the mechanic yesterday! Why wont you talk?

The engine stayed silent. A passerby chuckled, stopped, and asked, It not speaking?

Its as quiet as a church mouse, Emily retorted automatically.

Let me have a look, the man offered, nudging her aside. She had no choice but to let him.

Do you always go to the same garage? he asked.

Yeah, just three hundred yards from home. Very convenientdrop it off, pick it up in the morning.

The garage is lazy, he said with a grin. They never tightened the battery terminal. It fell off, and the car died. Theyd have charged you a fortune for a simple fix. Got any tools?

I think theres something in the boot, Emily said vaguely.

He resecured the terminal, the engine sputtered to life.

I dont know how to thank you, she said.

Just a bit of kindness, he waved.

Whats got you so down? Emily asked.

Hes lost his horse now, the man sighed. Feels like Im riding a bike without pedals.

Could you give me a lift home? Im still rattled by the breakdown. Emily offered. Otherwise Ill have to call a taxi.

He agreed, and they chatted over dinner at her flat. Emily learned the mans name was Steve Miller, and his story was oddly familiar. Hed been married to Helen for almost twenty years, and theyd built a life togetherchildren, a house, holidays at the seaside. But Helen had grown distant, demanded attention, and eventually left him for another man, taking the family car and a hefty mortgage with her. Their assets were tangled in a legal battle; a threemillionpound loan for home repairs hung over Steves head, and the court awarded the car to Helen because it was under her name.

Emily listened, feeling the weight of his struggles. She had her own business, expanding fast, and the prospect of helping Steve seemed both risky and rewarding. She decided to pay off part of his loan, using her own savings. Within two months she cleared the debt, and Steves gratitude knew no bounds.

She soon discovered, however, a stray coat hanging in the hallway and photos of Helen on his phone. The betrayal cut deep. Emilys tears turned to resolve.

Steve, youve hurt me badly, she said, voice steady. You betrayed not only me but yourself. You thought you could keep everything together while ignoring the damage you caused.

Steve scratched his head, pleading, We were exhausted, needed a break. I didnt mean to hurt you.

Emily lowered her gaze, studying the worn linoleum. The keys, the car, the credit cardsout. Leave my flat now.

What? Steve stammered.

Nothing, Emily snapped. You came in as a hero, leave like that.

Steve scoffed, but the debt he owed was now settled, thanks to her. He walked out, a lighter man but also a reminder that kindness can be repaid in unexpected ways.

Emily learned that love and loyalty are fragile, and that a single act of generosity can change a lifeyet it also demands boundaries. She kept moving forward, realizing that the true wealth lies not in the pounds she could spend, but in the respect she gave herself.

In the end, she understood that helping others should never cost you your own peace, and that the greatest lesson is to cherish honesty and selfrespect above all else.
