Chaos in the wardrobe, piles of wrinkled laundry, and spoiled soup in the fridge – I tried to kindly correct my wife, and ended up feeling to blame

A tangle of clothes spilling from the wardrobe, towering piles of laundry waiting to be ironed, and leftovers in the fridge gone badthis isnt what I imagined when I married my wife, but its what Ive ended up with.

Today, the closet looked like a hurricane had swept through it, and the ironing basket was overflowing. Even the soup left in the fridge had turnedhow does a stew go sour in England? I tried to gently comment to my wife, and naturally, I was somehow at fault.

I fell for Emily the moment I met her. She was beautiful beyond words and carried herself with such charm. For ages, I honestly thought Id lucked outa clever, stylish, tidy girl who seemed to have it all together. I didnt hesitate for long before asking her to marry me.

We agreed to move into a flat together in Manchester. Emily was upfront about not being keen on housework; she prioritised her career and made it clear she wanted to split all the chores equally. Im not proudfelt like a sensible approach, so I agreed. At first, it really did make sense. But over time, my optimism faded.

We sat down and laid out the division of labour for our new little family. Emily assured me she could balance her work life and home duties. Shed been dreaming about her career, and I didnt want to discourage her.

But six months after our wedding, things werent as rosy as I hoped. Life, as it always does, had rewritten our plans. Emily never became the career woman she hoped to be. She picked up a part-time position at a small firm with unpredictable hours and wages. All her earnings went toward things for herself. Meanwhile, I was working sunrise to sunset. And my wife didnt forget about our arrangement; she remembered my responsibilities very clearly, yet often glossed over her own.

Initially, Emily really did put effort into her share of the chores, but gradually she seemed to lose motivation. I tried not to press her, but her lack of effort became impossible to ignore. Mess was now impossible to miss.

Everywhere I turnedclothes heaped on chairs, piles of laundry left to gather dust. Somehow, Emily managed to make it out to be my fault. You work too, you bring in money, arent you able to help? shed say. The comment stung. Not only am I working myself into the ground for both of us, but the house is suddenly all on my shoulders? Wed both agreed on splitting the chores from the start.

Yesterday, I opened the fridge only to find a pot of stew so rank it could clear a room. Id hoped that once the baby arrived, Emily would take the lead while on maternity leave. Shed have more time at home, surely? But its only gotten messier. I wonder if life would be far simpler if I lived alone. Now, on top of it all, the arguments have become constant. Im supposed to understand her, to walk in her shoesbut who understands me? My days are spent at the office, then working from homeIm never away at a spa, just tired. All I really want is a few moments of peace.

I honestly dont comprehend what Emily does all day on maternity leave that stops her from making dinner, or at least tidying up. Can it really be so hard? The baby is only seven months old and spends much of the day asleep. Surely, theres a chance to dust or straighten things. Whats going to happen when we have another child? I still believe in fairness and teamwork. Im ready to support her, to share everything, but I need support as well. For reasons I cant grasp, Emily just doesnt see it.

I dont wish to split the family. I adore our little one. But I dont know how much longer I can put up with this charade. My patience is wearing thin.

Is it wrong to feel this way? I wonder whose side anyone would take if they saw our situation.
