**Diary Entry**
My daughter Emily is the life and soul of every gathering. Her warm, open-hearted nature draws friends to her like bees to honey. Here in Manchester, our house is always full of her mates—kids of all ages, not just her classmates. I’m glad she’s so sociable, but lately, things have spiralled out of control, and I’m at my wit’s end.
It all started when Emily began inviting friends over. With winter setting in and the chill in the air, I didn’t mind them playing indoors. At first, it was sweet—she’d serve tea and biscuits, put on music, and make up games. I even admired how welcoming she was. But now she’s bringing home strangers—kids I’ve never met—and their behaviour shocks me.
Just last week, I came home from work to find two teenagers I didn’t recognise in the kitchen, eating the cottage pie straight from the dish—meant to last our family two days. Not a scrap was left! They dumped their dirty plates in the sink and slipped out without a word. I was livid. There was nothing left for dinner, and I was too exhausted to cook again.
I tried explaining to Emily that she can’t invite strangers over and let them help themselves to our meals. Biscuits, crisps—fine. But food from the fridge is for family. Emily flared up, called me stingy, and stormed off, slamming her bedroom door so hard the windows shook. She locked herself in and wouldn’t speak to me. I felt awful—but what else could I do?
That night, I boiled potatoes and fried sausages, calling everyone to the table. Emily refused to eat, acting like I was the enemy. The next morning, before work, I warned her, “There’s enough food for two days—I’ll be home late, so don’t expect me to cook.” Yet when I returned past eleven, my husband, Thomas, was frying eggs in an empty kitchen. Emily’s friends had raided the fridge again. She was shut in her room—no explanations, no apologies.
I’m desperate. How do I get through to her? She won’t listen, just throws accusations—”You’re mean! You hate my friends!” Is this just teenage rebellion? Or have Thomas and I gone wrong somewhere? I don’t know what to do. My heart’s torn—I want Emily happy, but this chaos can’t go on.
We’re not tight-fisted, but our budget’s stretched thin. Thomas and I work ourselves ragged just to keep the household running. I cook proper meals for us, only to feed strangers instead. My mum insists, “It’s time to lay down the law!” But I won’t resort to shouting or punishment. I want to fix this calmly—but how? Emily won’t talk, and I feel like I’m losing her.
What would you do? How do I make her see the strain this puts on us without hurting her? How do I set boundaries before our home becomes a free café? Has anyone else faced this? I need advice—I’m at my breaking point.
