Elizabeth lost her parents when she was just four years old. She couldnt recall the tragic day when her mother passed away after being struck by a neighbours car. Her father worked himself to the bone, enduring a tough life that left him worn and weary long before his time. As Elizabeth grew older, she never made the journey to visit her father. After she married, her own life took centre stage, with only the occasional phone call linking her to him. Her husband disapproved of spending money on an old man who didnt deserve it, suggesting Elizabeths efforts were wasted. Elizabeths father always hoped his daughter would support him in his old age. A neighbour advised him to seek help in court and request maintenance. Surely, his daughter would not begrudge him.
At the courthouse, Elizabeth met her father in tears.
Dad! Did you lose hope in me so much that you had to bring me to the court? she asked.
Elizabeth, I havent had money for bread for two days. I was counting on the promises you made. Perhaps I failed in raising you
You knew I had a job, Elizabeth replied, distressed. My husband always bought groceries for you, sent money whenever you needed.
Her husband interjected abruptly, Stop playing the victim. I send you money every month. It isnt meant for nights out or frivolous things. Elizabeth broke down, quietly turning away.
I need you to listen to something very important, her father continued, and Elizabeth turned reluctantly.
Back when your mother was still with us, I came home from work to find her sitting in the kitchen, deep in thought. She had a package next to her: it was a little girl. Your mother found her abandoned in a box beside the railway containers. We chose to raise her as our own. Elizabeth, that little girl was you. Ive loved you dearly all your life. Please forgive me, sweetheart.
Her father withdrew the lawsuit. During their conversation, Elizabeth discovered that her husband had never once visited her father; instead, he spent the money meant for support on women, nights out, and gambling. Elizabeth felt a wave of regret for the years lost on someone who never truly cared.
Eventually, Elizabeth left her husband and moved in with her father. Together, they found happiness at last. Through hardship and forgiveness, Elizabeth learned that genuine kindness forms the bonds of a real family, and its never too late to mend what has been broken.
