Monica raised her two daughters on her own. Their father passed away when they were little, and she never remarried. She worried that bringing a new husband into the family might not be good for her girls, so when faced with the choice between marriage and her children, Monica chose her children without hesitation.
Rebecca was the eldest, and Charlotte the younger sister. Rebecca married early and soon gave birth to a daughter named Amelia. After that, she moved into her husbands flat. Sadly, the marriage didnt last, and a few years later, Rebecca returned home to Monica, carrying Amelia in her arms.
Charlotte was upset with Rebeccas decision. She was convinced that Rebecca had come back just to force her out of their mothers place. But she was mistaken; Rebeccas health was failingshed been diagnosed with cancer. Amelia ended up in Monicas care.
At that time, Charlotte was also married and had two children of her own. One of Monicas elderly relatives, an aunt, offered her flat to Charlotte. Without much deliberation, the aunt transferred the flat to Charlotte, assuring her that if anything happened, she wouldnt make any claim to Monicas property.
Rebecca passed away when Amelia was seventeen. Not long after, Monica herself became ill. One day, Charlotte came to Monica and asked who would inherit the flat once Monica was gone.
What do you mean, who? Monica replied. Amelia will have it. Shes alone nowher mothers gone and her father has no ties to her. She cant be left with nowhere to go.
But shes only your granddaughter, and Im your daughter. Ive got two children myself. Amelia will grow up and buy her own place. Give me back my flat, Charlotte demanded loudly.
No. We agreed on this long ago, Monica answered.
Then Ill never set foot in here again.
Charlotte showed no concern for whether the teenager had time to do her schoolwork or care for her ill grandmother. After missing out on inheritance, she stopped any contact with her mother altogether.
