Devious Surprise: The Mother-in-Law’s Secret Plan

**A Wicked Surprise: The Mother-in-Law’s Secret Plan**

Katherine was still asleep when a sharp knock at the door shattered the quiet of their suburban London flat.

“William, get the door,” she muttered, nudging her husband in the ribs.

“I’m sleeping,” he grumbled, pulling the duvet tighter.

With a sigh, Katherine dragged herself from under the warm covers and shuffled to the door in her slippers. When she opened it, she froze. Standing there was her mother-in-law.

“Margaret? What are you doing here?” Katherine’s eyes widened in shock.

Without a word, Margaret swept past her, trailing the sharp scent of her perfume.

“Kate, who is it?” William emerged, rubbing his eyes.

“Keeping quiet, are you? Go on, tell your wife about our little surprise,” Margaret said with a mocking smile.

Katherine spun around, her chest tightening. “What surprise?”

“Again?” Katherine stared at William in despair. “We just visited your mother last weekend! I’m exhausted—can’t we just have a quiet weekend to ourselves?” Her voice trembled, but William was unmoved.

“Kate, you know she’s struggling since Dad passed. She’s on her own—I’m her only son. I have to help.”

“And why is she here now?” Katherine fought to keep her tone even.

“She needed paint—light beige—and a few bits for the house.”

“Couldn’t she order them online?”

“She doesn’t know how. We’ll go this weekend. It’ll be nice—a change of scenery.”

“A DIY store? How thrilling,” Katherine scoffed, resentment simmering.

Not wanting to ruin the weekend, she grabbed her phone and ordered everything for delivery, paying for it herself. Margaret would have no reason to visit now. The delivery was set for Friday evening. Katherine exhaled, convinced she’d outsmarted her.

But on Saturday morning, Margaret arrived with bulging bags of wallpaper and paint tins.

“Did you expect me to carry all this alone?” Margaret’s glare was icy. “William, you didn’t tell her?”

Still in her pyjamas, Katherine stammered, “Margaret, this was supposed to be a surprise—”

“I’m sure it was,” Margaret sneered. “Well? Aren’t you going to explain?”

Katherine turned to William, dread pooling in her stomach.

“I’m moving in for a few months,” Margaret announced triumphantly, slipping off her coat.

Before Katherine could react, the second blow landed.

“And you—you’re moving to the countryside.”

Margaret swept into the kitchen while Katherine seized William’s arm.

“What is this? We never discussed this!”

“Sorry, I didn’t get a chance. Mum suggested it. Don’t worry, we’re not going yet.”

Katherine stormed off, seething. Later, William explained.

“Kate, think about it—it’s an opportunity! We’ll renovate the cottage however you like. Great for your portfolio. Mum can’t handle the dust, and someone needs to supervise.”

“And that someone is me?”

“What’s the issue? You need work—we’re helping!”

“Helping? By exiling me to the middle of nowhere? I love our flat!”

“We’ll go later. You’ve ordered the paint; we’ll start with one room.”

“And what about the dust for *her*?” Katherine snapped.

“Open a window—she won’t notice. Besides, the flat’s hers. The cottage is mine.”

“Only because you never claimed your inheritance!”

“Stay out of it!” William cut her off. “It’s settled.”

Margaret, eavesdropping, burst in.

“Ungrateful girl! You came with nothing, and now you want what’s ours?”

“With *nothing*?” Katherine’s breath caught.

“Without my son, you’d have nothing! And now you dare make demands?”

Katherine stood her ground. “It’s only fair. You’ve cheated William. What if you remarry?”

Margaret cackled. “Fine—renovate the cottage, and I’ll transfer the flat to William. But the house stays mine. Happy?”

Katherine exhaled in relief. William, though tense, forced a smile.

“Still, I feel bad for Mum,” he murmured later in the car.

A week later, they finished the flat’s first room and moved to the countryside.

William fretted. “She means well, and we’re just…”

“We’re taking what’s rightfully ours,” Katherine said firmly.

The cottage was bleak—peeling walls, creaking floors, and endless work ahead. The cost was daunting.

“We’ll get a loan,” William reasoned. “The flat will be ours.”

Reluctantly, Katherine agreed. But as she worked, something shifted. She fell in love with the cottage, dreaming of rose beds and peonies.

“Liam, what if we stay?” she ventured one evening.

“The flat’s cramped. Here, there’s space, fresh air!”

“I’ll talk to Mum,” he promised.

Katherine was overjoyed. She poured herself into the cottage, even planting a vegetable patch. Life was perfect—until Margaret arrived unannounced.

“Margaret! What a surprise,” Katherine greeted, eager to show off the renovations.

“*Surprise*? I’m coming home!”

“Home? Liam didn’t tell you? We’re staying. The house is his—no need to change anything.”

Margaret paled. “You scheming little—! You’re stealing my house? I won’t allow it! Liam will side with me—pack your things!”

Stunned, Katherine realised too late how much the cottage meant to Margaret, who’d always scorned the countryside.

They waited in tense silence for William. When he arrived, he looked defeated.

“The firm went under. I’ve lost my job. We’ll have to stay here, Kate. It’s cheaper—no expensive shops, just the basics.”

Margaret said nothing, studying her son. Katherine secretly rejoiced—he’d chosen without persuasion.

“Sorry, Mum,” William said softly. “We need this.”

Margaret nodded stiffly and left.

William turned to Katherine, grinning.

“How was that?”

“What?”

“I knew Mum wanted the cottage, but I saw how happy you were. The job story was a ruse—I didn’t want a feud over property.”

Katherine hugged him, whispering her thanks. They’d won their home—and no one could take it from them.
