During the divorce, a wealthy husband decided to leave his wife an abandoned farm, lost in the middle of nowhere. Yet, a year later, something happened that utterly took him by surprise.
Andrew, you do know I dont need you here, dont you? Emily said firmly. I suggest you go back to London.
Which city are you talking about? he answered, tired. Shed been betrayed by the one person shed trusted the most, and no longer had the strength for another argument. Theyd started from scratch, sold their flat, and invested everything into their business. Andrew had only chipped in with a tiny spare room in a shared house, but Emilys cleverness and dedication ensured their success. They lived simply, moving from rental to rental, but finally managed to find some stability.
Over time, Andrew began acting like the true master of the house. Cunningly, he put everything in his name, making sure Emily would get nothing when the divorce came. Once every last asset was in his hands, he promptly filed for divorce.
Dont you think thats a bit much, Andrew? Emily asked, hurt.
He shrugged with indifference.
Dont start again. You havent contributed in ages. I do all the work, and you do nothing.
You told me to take a break and focus on myself, she replied calmly.
Andrew sighed in annoyance.
Im fed up with these pointless discussions. By the way, do you remember that old farm I inherited from my former boss, Mr. Harris? He passed away and left me that patch of worthless land. Perfect for you. If you dont want it, you get nothing at all.
Emily smiled bitterly. She saw right through his game. After twelve years together, she now realised shed lived with a stranger.
Fine, but on one condition: I want the farm legally in my name.
No problem. Saves me on tax, Andrew replied with a mocking grin.
Emily said nothing more. She packed her things and moved into a hotel. She was determined to start over, whatever awaited her whether a rundown farm or just a barren field. Shed see for herself when she got there. If it wasnt worth it, shed head back to London or find another way to rebuild her life.
She loaded her car with only the essentials, leaving the rest behind with Andrew and his new girlfriend. If he thought hed still be able to benefit from her expertise or intelligence, he was sorely mistaken. His new partner, whom Emily had seen only briefly, seemed more haughty than smart.
Andrew handed her the paperwork with a sneer.
Best of luck.
And to you, Emily responded evenly.
Dont forget to send me a picture with the sheep, he laughed.
Without another word, Emily closed the car door and drove off. As she left the city behind, tears streamed down her cheeks. She wasnt sure how long shed wept before a gentle tap on the window roused her.
Are you alright, love? My husband and I noticed youve been parked here for a while, asked an elderly lady kindly.
Emily looked at her, then glanced in the rearview mirror, noticing the bus stop. She managed a faint smile.
Im fine, just feeling a bit overwhelmed.
The woman nodded in understanding.
Weve just come from the hospital. Our neighbour is there all alone, nobody visits her. Are you heading towards Somerset?
Emily raised her eyebrows in surprise.
Somerset? Where the farm is?
Yes, though its hardly a farm now. The owner died, and its been neglected ever since. Only a few locals tend to the animals out of fondness.
Emily smiled faintly.
Well, thats just where Im headed. Hop in, Ill give you a lift.
The lady settled up front while her husband took the back seat.
Im Emily, she said as she drove.
Im Margaret Smith, and this is my husband, Arthur, replied the lady warmly.
On the way, Emily learned all sorts about the farm whod been pilfering, who still looked after the animals, and how badly the place had fallen into disrepair. Once there, Emily saw empty fields and a nearly collapsed barn, with only twenty cows remaining. Still, she chose to stay and fight for her new beginning.
A year later, Emily watched with pride as eighty cows grazed peacefully on her lush green meadows. Shed turned the abandoned farm into a thriving business. It hadnt been easy shed sold her jewellery to afford feed, and spent her last savings. Now, though, business was booming and her produce was in demand even in surrounding counties.
One day, a young woman named Charlotte brought her the local paper with an advertisement for refrigerated lorries at a good price. Emily recognised the telephone number it belonged to Andrews firm. With a sly smile, she asked Charlotte to ring up and offer 5% more on the condition the vehicles werent shown to any other buyers.
When Emily turned up to collect them, she came face to face with Andrew, who looked completely stunned.
Youre buying them? he asked, incredulous.
Yes, for the farm you gave me. Its a wonderful business now, and were expanding, Emily replied, calm and composed.
Andrew was left speechless. While his own life was falling apart, Emily had put the past far behind her.
In the end, Emily found real love in John, a mechanic who helped her improve the farm. Together, they celebrated their daughters christening, while Andrew could only watch from a distance as his own world unravelled.
Looking back now, Ive learnt that sometimes, what one person thinks is a punishment can turn out to be anothers greatest opportunity. If you meet hardship with courage and hard work, life just might hand you exactly what you were meant for.
