Early Rise: A Street Sweeper’s Dawn Journey

Tommy dragged himself out of bed at three in the morning to sweep streets in London. Thanks to his stellar school marks, he’d scraped together a scholarship to university. Engineering was the dream—not to get filthy rich, just to afford a decent life and help his family.

Easier said than done. Juggling work and study meant planning every minute. He’d wake at dawn, cram in an hour of notes before clocking in by five. Some shifts ran late. Then it was a mad dash home—or to the nearest pub loo—for a slapdash wash. Winter left him shivering; summer stuck him with a lingering whiff of bin lorry.

Sometimes he stumbled into lectures late. Other times, no amount of scrubbing could shake the rubbish smell. His classmates wrinkled noses, cracked “take-out” jokes, or dramatically flung windows open. No one wanted the seat next to “Trash-Tommy.”

He kept his head down, scribbling notes with shaky, sleep-deprived hands. Eyes drooped, but he fought it. This grind was his shot at something better.

Lecturers noticed. The kid answered every question, never whinged, never cheated. After one brutal exam, the professor marched in, deadpan: “Everyone failed.” The room froze. “Except Tommy.”

Cue the mutters. “Teacher’s pet,” someone hissed. “Bet he cheats.”

The professor cut in, loud: “How’d you manage it, Tommy?”

Tommy fidgeted. “I—I study out loud. Rewrite notes. Record myself and listen while working.”

Silence. Later, the prof caught students snickering by the lockers. He rounded on them: “You lot wouldn’t know hard work if it bit you. Tommy’s up at three hauling bins while you’re snoring. Still tops the class. And here you are, acting like toddlers. Be ashamed.”

A few heads hung. One lad mumbled an apology. Another clapped Tommy’s shoulder. The professor sat beside him: “Don’t let the twits get to you. Life’s not fair, but you’re making it count.”

Tommy just nodded. But inside? That tiny spark—proof the grind meant something.

So keep at it. Your worth isn’t in their snide looks, but in how you push through when no one’s cheering. Like Tommy. Stay stubborn. The grind? It’ll pay off. You’ve earned that much.
