Ex-Husband Promises Our Son an Apartment But Demands I Marry Him Again

Im sixty years old and live in Manchester. Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine that after everything I’d enduredtwenty years of quiet, of silencethe past would come crashing back into my life with such brazen cruelty. And the most painful part? The one stirring it all up is my own son.

At twenty-five, I was head over heels in love. Williamtall, charming, full of lifeseemed like the answer to every dream. We married quickly, and a year later, our son Oliver was born. Those early years were magic. We lived in a tiny flat, dreaming together, making plans. I taught at a local school; he worked as an engineer. Nothing could shatter our happiness.

But over time, William changed. Late nights, lies, distance. I ignored the whispers, the unfamiliar scents on his collar, the way his eyes darted away. Until the truth became impossible to deny: he was cheating. Not once, but repeatedly. Friends, neighbours, even his own parents knew. And me? I clung to the wreckage, for Olivers sake. I lasted far too long, hoping hed change. Then, one night, I woke to an empty bed and realisedit was over.

I packed our things, took five-year-old Oliver by the hand, and moved in with my mother. William didnt even try to stop us. A month later, he left for a job abroad, found another woman, and erased us from his life. No letters, no calls. Just silence. And I was left alone. My mother passed, then my father. Oliver and I faced everything togetherschool, hobbies, sickness, joy, A-levels. I worked double shifts, denying myself so hed want for nothing. There was no time for love. He was my world.

When Oliver got into university in Cambridge, I supported him as best I couldcare packages, what little money I could spare. But I couldnt buy him a flat. He never complained, insisting hed manage. I was so proud.

Then, a month ago, he came to me with news: he was getting married. My joy was short-lived. He fidgeted, avoiding my eyes. Then it spilled out:

Mum I need your help. Its about Dad.

My blood ran cold. Hed reconnected with William, whod returned to England. Oliver said his father was offering him the keys to a two-bedroom flatinherited from his grandmotherbut on one condition. I had to remarry him and let him live in my home.

I couldnt breathe. I stared at my son, unable to believe what I was hearing.

Youre alone Youve no one, he pressed. Why not try again? For me. For my future. Dads changed

Silently, I walked to the kitchen. Kettle, tea, trembling hands. Everything blurred. Twenty years Id carried us alone. Twenty years without a single word from him. And now he was backwith a *bargain*.

I returned, voice steady.

No. I wont do it.

Oliver exploded. Shouting, blaming, hurling accusationsthat Id always been selfish, that Id robbed him of a father, that I was ruining his life now. I said nothing. Every word cut deeper. He didnt know how Id wept from exhaustion in the dark. How Id sold my wedding ring to buy him a winter coat. How Id gone without so he could eat.

Im not lonely. My life has been hard, but honest. I have my job, my books, my garden, my friends. I dont need a man who betrayed menow crawling back out of convenience, not love.

Oliver left without a goodbye. He hasnt called since. I know hes hurt. I understandhe wants whats best for him, just as I once did. But I wont trade my self-respect for bricks and mortar. The price is too high.

Maybe one day hell see that. Maybe not soon. But Ill wait. Because I love himtruly, without conditions, without flats or what ifs. I brought him into this world with love, raised him with love. And I wont let love become a transaction.

As for my ex-husband? He belongs in the past. And there hell stay.
