Feared My Husband Would Leave Because I Had a Daughter Instead of a Son

I worried my husband would leave me for giving him a daughter instead of a son.

In my family, sons were practically worshipped. We’re from England, and for some reason, girls just didn’t get the same enthusiasm. I was raised with that mindset. I have a younger brother and sister, and the difference in how we were treated was obvious.

When my sister was born, Dad was deeply disappointed. Even though the scan had shown a girl, he’d clung to the hope the doctors were wrong—until the delivery room proved otherwise. But when Mum was pregnant with my brother? Oh, what a transformation. Relatives congratulated them like they’d won the lottery. Everyone was over the moon.

“A girl’s just a girl—she’ll marry and leave. But a son? That’s the family name carried on!” Dad would declare.

The parenting gap was just as wide. My brother wasn’t burdened with chores, never scolded for mistakes or mischief. Not that my sister and I were neglected, but the favouritism was plain. He might as well have been carried around on a velvet cushion.

I grew up convinced every family preferred boys. So when I married, that belief came with me. My husband and I got on like a house on fire—utterly in sync. When he mentioned wanting a son, I wasn’t surprised. Of course he did. When I got pregnant, I dreamed of a little boy. Then the scan revealed a girl. My heart sank. How would I tell him? I imagined him storming out, suitcase in hand.

Why did my mind leap to such dramatics? My parents hadn’t split over daughters. Still, I spiralled so badly I wound up hospitalised, at risk of losing the baby. My husband was away but rushed back instantly.

He still didn’t know the scan results, and I had no idea how to break the news. He didn’t ask, though—just fussed over me, promising treats, begging me to relax.

After he left, I sobbed uncontrollably. A nurse came to calm me and, between hiccups, I spilled everything. I’ve no idea how she understood a word.

“Honestly, love, there’s millions of blokes out there. You’ll manage! Just focus on that baby—stress is no good for her. She’ll come out all jittery!” she said.

Next morning, she accosted my husband, scolding him before realising he had no clue about the scan. He strode into my room, baffled. “Where on earth did you get that daft idea?” I confessed. He stared at me like I’d lost the plot. “Boy or girl, I couldn’t care less. Stop inventing problems!”

I tried to believe him, though a niggling doubt lingered—was he just saying it to soothe me? But when our daughter arrived, and I saw his face, the tears in his eyes? That’s when I knew. Now, I laugh at how silly I was. Thank goodness for that no-nonsense nurse—without her, I’d have worked myself into a right state before the birth.
