First Marriage at 55: My Long-Awaited Love Story

My Late-Life Love: A Marriage at Fifty-Five

I married for the first time at fifty-five. Five years have passed since our weddingIm now sixty, my husband sixty-five. Marrying late isnt so strange these daysanything can happen. Whats surprising is that it was the first marriage for both of us. And, would you believe it, I never planned to marry at all!

When I was young, not yet twenty, a man I loved deeply broke my heart. His name was Victor. He left me when I was five months pregnant. At first, God forgive me, I thought of ending it all, but I pulled myself together and swore Id never marry. I refused to let another scoundrel run off when things got tough. And I kept that promise. My daughter grew up, married, had childrenyet I stubbornly lived alone, like a mule digging its heels in. Not that men didnt proposeplenty did! But I was set in my ways: once I made a decision, I stuck to it. Years of solitude made me tougher, less soft. But fate, that unpredictable mistress, had other plans.

Heres how I ended up at the altar. After retiring, like many pensioners, I took up gardening. My parents left me a small cottage with a bit of land. Id take the train therejust over an hours journeyso I always brought a crossword magazine to pass the time. One day, a couple boarded at a stop, followed by a slight, elderly man. At first, no one spoke. Then I heard the womans quiet voice.

Victor, lets visit the children, help them out, she pleaded. Youre their father.

The trains rumble nearly drowned out her husbands booming reply.

What, you daft woman? Want me to grovel before those idiots?

What followed was a stream of vile insults aimed at his wife and children. I couldnt help but glance at themand froze. That scowling face belonged to *Victor*! The same Victor whod abandoned me pregnant years ago. He hadnt changed, just grown more bitter. Still as towering as in his youth. He didnt recognise me, but catching my stare, he snarled:

Whatre you gawping at? Turn away, or Ill shut your eyes for you!

I went rigidwhether from shock or fear, I couldnt tell.

Then something incredible happened. The small, elderly man across from me stood and planted himself between us, his voice steady.

If you dont stop insulting women, youll answer to me. A man who speaks like that is nothing. Ill fold you like a paper plane!

My heart dropped. A *paper plane*? Victor could crush him with a finger! I braced to defend my protectorbut then Victor shrank, shoulders hunched, muttering under his breath. Thats when I realised: this bully was only brave with women. Face a real man, and he folded. And *this* was the man Id wasted tears over? My eyes burned. It all happened in seconds, like a film speeding through thirty years.

Victor and his wife got off two stops later. I was cryinghollow, aching.

Tears dont spoil your lovely face, my defender smiled. Suddenly, he wasnt that little old man anymore. He was brave, kind. His name was Alfred Wilson, a retired army veteran. Thats how I met my late-life husband. And for the first time in decades, I *wanted* to marryto feel loved.

And so I did.

Alfred and I are happy. Life has a way of setting things rightno matter your age. Even autumn can be filled with love.
