Five Years Without Visits from the Children, but a Will Change Brought Them Back Home

Five years without a visit from my children, but the news of a change in my will brought them running.

I have two sons, three grandchildren, two daughters-in-law and yet, I live like an orphan. For years, I believed Id raised men who would one day be my support. But life showed me a different truth. Since my husband passed five years ago, not one of them has set foot in my home. No calls, no letters, no visits. Then, one day, I declared loudly: *Im leaving my flat to my niece.* And just like that, as if by magic, they reappeared.

I had two boys and thought myself fortunatepeople say sons stay close to their mothers. I trusted I wouldnt be alone in my old age. My husband and I worked hard to give them love, education, a good start in life. While their father was alive, they still visited now and then. But the moment we buried him, it was as if I ceased to exist.

They live in the same city, just forty minutes by bus. Both are married with families of their own. I have two grandsons and a granddaughter Ive never met. After a fall, I walk with difficulty, yet they never have timealways busy, ignoring my calls, promising to ring back and never doing so. Ive grown used to their empty words.

When the neighbours flooded my home, I called the eldestno answer. I rang the youngerhe promised to come but never did. All I needed was someone to paint over the stain on the ceiling. In the end, I hired a decorator. It wasnt the money that hurt but knowing two sons couldnt spare an hour for their mother.

When my fridge broke down, I called again, asking only for company to buy a new one, afraid of being swindled. The reply? *Mum, dont fussthe salesperson will explain everything.* In the end, my brother and niece went with me.

Then came the pandemic. Suddenly, they remembered me. They rang once a month*Dont go out, Order shopping online, Be careful.* But I didnt know how. My niece taught me. She showed me the apps, brought medicine, stayed when I fell ill. Every evening, shed call: *Auntie Grace, are you alright?* We grew closer than I ever was with my own children.

I started spending holidays with my brother and his family. My nieces little girl calls me *Gran.* And I realisedI may have sons, but its my niece whos become my family. She asks for nothing. Shes just there. She cares.

So I decided: if my sons have forgotten me, my home should go to the one who stood by me when it mattered. I put her name on the will. She doesnt know. I only wished to do what was fairto give to the one who always gave to me.

But someone must have talked. That same day, my eldest rang, his voice tight, words sharp. *Is it true youre giving the flat to someone else?* When I confirmed, he shouted, *Youre mad! How could you? Thats family inheritance!* I hung up.

That night, they knocked on my door. Both of them. With a cake. With the granddaughter Id never met. Smiling, warm. Then came the arguments*You cant do this, Shell throw you out, Were your sons, Youre giving it to a stranger.* I listened in silence before saying, *Thank you for your concern. But my minds made up.*

They left, slamming the door. They swore if I signed the papers, Id never see my grandchildren again and could forget their help. But my dears, I havent seen you for yearsonly indifference. Five years passed before you returned, and only because you realised what you stood to lose. Not your mother. The flat.

I dont regret it. If my niece ever turns her back on me, so be it. But I dont believe she will. Shes kind, honest, true. And you? Now live with your consciencesif you still have them.

*Sometimes the family you choose means more than the family youre given.*
