For the Village, It Was Shocking News: Eva’s Brother Became Her Husband

That day was the talk of the entire village: Evelyns brother had become her husband. Even the neighbours barely said hello anymore. We combined our households into one, setting up a neat garden and working together to care for everything. But when Evelyn started attending church regularly, her life changed forever. Some people seem to lead charmed lives, while for others, the path is riddled with hardships its impossible to know what fate has in store.

Evelyn never remembered her mum. She died in childbirth, leaving her dad, John, alone with a little girl not a relative in sight to help. Some people whispered that Evelyn might be best sent to an orphanage, but John dismissed the suggestion outright. Evelyn was his whole world, the apple of his eye and his only hope.

Our next-door neighbour Martha, a widow with a thirteen-year-old son, visited daily. Shed bring us dinner, wash little Evelyn, feed her, and carry her about when she cried. One day, after gazing up with wide blue eyes, Evelyn said her first word to Martha: Mummy.

Martha looked uncomfortable, a shiver of something strange passing through her, while tears welled up in Johns eyes. Do you hear that, Martha? She called you mummy, he said. So be one, wont you? He looked at Martha with warmth and hope, waiting for her reply. Lets talk about this later. Suppose we eat something first? she said, a blush rising in her cheeks.

Martha was ten years older than John. That wasnt the only thing making her wary; she wasnt sure how her own son, Stephen, would take the news. But Stephen was surprisingly reasonable about it all: Were already a family, arent we, mum?

Our homes became one, with a tidy fence and everyone pitching in on the house and garden. The children were raised kindly, and Martha and John had real respect for each other. Marthas eyes sparkled with happiness, making you forget she was older than her husband. But that quiet happiness didnt last as long as anyone hoped. One afternoon, while John was tending to the horse, he was caught off guard by a sharp kick. He cried out in pain, Martha rushed out in a panic and saw John writhing on the ground. We called for the ambulance, and the doctors did what they could, but after three days, John slipped away.

At not quite forty, Martha was a widow once more. Stephen left for technical college to study construction, with a room in the dorm and meals a relief, since Martha now had Evelyn to look after by herself.

Stephen always saved something from his grant to buy Evelyn a little present. Shed race out to greet him when he came home, jumping onto his lap. One day, hed brought her a doll, and as she hugged him, she said, Thank you, Daddy. Martha saw the confusion in her sons face and tried to make light of it: Dont worry, dear. Evelyn was just looking at old photos of her father before you arrived, asking about him, and I said hed gone away somewhere far. Perhaps she noticed you looked a bit like him. Shell forget in time.

But Evelyn kept calling Stephen Dad, and in the end, nobody minded anymore.

When Stephen finished his studies, he did his National Service and then came back home taller, stronger and more handsome than ever. Martha wondered if hed bring a wife home, but year after year, he seemed not to notice any of the girls in the village. No clubbing, nothing straight home after work. He was forever fixing, repairing and building things. Doing it all for Evelyn! Shes grown into a real beauty. Soon therell be chaps calling for her, hed joke.

One autumn afternoon, Martha was gathering potatoes in the garden when she suddenly fainted. She blamed it on being tired, but next day she couldnt even get out of bed. Dizzy, nauseous, unsteady on her feet, she was taken by Stephen to the county hospital. The diagnosis floored him: Martha had a brain tumour. The consultant shook his head and said softly, Id take her home, son. Best she passes among family.

Martha faded before our eyes. Day and night, Evelyn never left her side, quietly hiding her tears, unable to picture life without her gentle mum.

Just before she passed, Martha asked to see Stephen alone. Promise me, son, youll never leave Evelyn. You arent really relatedbut theres nobody wholl treasure her as you do, and you wont find peace without her. These were her last words, spoken in barely a whisper. After the funeral, Stephen pondered Marthas words over and over. And only later did he realise she had wanted him to marry Evelyn. But how? Hed been her brother, her father, now her husband too? No, he thought, such a thing was impossible.

Stephen moved to his own house and started to rearrange everything as he pleased. Evelyn didnt know what shed done to deserve him keeping his distance. She missed his voice, his laughter, the comfortable chats. She nearly fainted when, coming home from work, she found hed put up a fence between their houses.

One day, when Evelyn got her first bonus at work as a bookkeeper at the local farm, she bought a bottle of bubbly and a cake, plucked up her courage, and went round to Stephens. She stood on his doorstep, radiant. Celebrate with me, Stephen? My first-ever bonus! she called, her cheeks flushed, heart pounding in her chest.

Stephen went stiff as a board, watching her as if in a trance, unable to speak. He knew then he was in love with her after all. Had Martha sensed it before she died?

The silences between them grew longer, more strained. Evelyn finally spoke up, haltingly, saying maybe it was all wrong, sinful even, but her heart belonged to him, and no one else would ever do.

That Sunday, Evelyn went to confession. The vicar listened carefully and assured her there was no blood between them, so a marriage was allowed.

Thats how Stephen, once called her brother and father, became her husband. Thirty years have passed since. Together, Evelyn and I raised two sons and now dote on four beautiful granddaughters. Folks said what they liked, but weve learned that if theres love in your heart, you must find the patience to ignore gossip and treasure your feelings so they outlast the years.

And now Evelyn and I believe, with all our hearts, that its as God intended: a mothers blessing never leads her child astray, and sometimes family is chosen by love, not by blood.
