Grandparents Who Could Help, But Won’t: Why We’re Left Struggling for the First Home Deposit

Oh, its such a storymy husbands parents are loaded, but they refused to lift a finger to help us with the deposit for our first flat. Honestly, whats the point of having grandparents like that if they wont step up when it matters?

My husband, William, comes from money. His parents live in this massive house in central London, drive fancy cars, and jet off on holiday all the time. Me? I grew up in a tiny village near Manchester in a proper working-class family. When Will and I met and decided to get married, our backgrounds didnt matterwe were young, in love, and determined to make it on our own. Not that wed say no to help if it was offered, but we werent counting on it, you know?

Wed been dreaming of buying our own place for ages. Sick of renting these tiny one-bed flats where somethings always breakingwallpaper peeling, taps leaking, landlords just waiting for us to move out. Wills parents knew we were struggling, but they acted like they didnt have a clue. They couldve helped if they wanted to. But they *didnt* want to, and thats what stung.

My parents live up north, near Manchester, and moneys tight for themId never expect them to chip in. Wills folks are right here in the city, but after the wedding, we decided not to rely on them. We wanted to stand on our own two feet. So we rented, worked ourselves ragged, skipped holidaysanything to save for a place of our own. His parents knew, but they just stayed out of it.

Then one day, we went over for dinner, and his mum started in with the usual*When are you two giving me grandkids?* So I dropped a hint:

*”Well think about kids once weve got our own flat. Right now, we cant even scrape together the deposit.”*

She just gave me this pitying look and didnt say a word. Her expression was blank, like my words just evaporated into thin air.

A few months later, I found out I was pregnant. Turned our whole world upside down. When we told Wills parents, they were over the mooncongratulations, plans to spoil the baby, the lot. So I bit the bullet and asked if they could help with the deposit. I mean, isnt it better for a kid to grow up in their own home?

But oh, the way her face changed. Cold as ice, she said they *didnt have the spare cash* and *couldnt do anything*. Lies! The day before, his dad had bragged to Will about buying a brand-new Range Rover. So theyve got money for a flash car but nothing for their own son and grandchild?

I kept my cool, but inside? I was fuming. Our dream of a proper home for our baby just crumbled right in front of us. And now? Looks like were stuck in that cramped rental for even longer.
