**Diary Entry 12th October 2023**
I never thought Id write this, but life has a way of forcing your hand. Today, my son, Thomas, came home with news that shook me to the core. He barely stepped through the door before blurting it out:
“Dad, Ive got something to tell you. Our neighbours daughter, Lily shes pregnant. Its mine.”
I froze for a second, then said calmly, “Then marry her.”
“What? Im too young for this. Its not the right timeweve barely even been together!”
“Seriously?” I scoffed, bitterness creeping in. “So you were man enough to chase after girls, but now its time to own up, youre suddenly a child again. Fine.” Without another word, I called for my wife. “Margaret! Come here a moment!”
Margaret walked in, wiping her hands on her apron. “Whats happened?”
“Listen. Our boys gone and got a girl pregnantLily, the neighbours daughterand now he wont do right by her. Hiding like a coward.”
Margaret didnt even flinch. Her face hardened. “Good. Why should we bring some random girl into this house? These girls are cunningthey find a bloke with a bit of money, let themselves get caught, then come crying, Marry me! And whos to say its even his? He should get a test. Besides, Thomas is younghes a man, its natural he couldnt resist. But were not raising someone elses mistake.”
I sighed deeply and said quietly, “But what if it really is his?”
“So what if it is? Should we pay for his recklessness? Tell him to get the tests donewell see the truth then.” She turned and walked out, leaving me alone with Thomas.
“You know,” I began, “I was young once too. I loved someone else, but I married your mother. Not out of loveout of duty. Because being a man isnt just about passion. Its about choices and consequences. She was pregnant. I didnt know if I could love her, but I knew one thingthat child was innocent. My blood, my responsibility. And Thomas, hard as it was, Ive never once regretted staying.”
Three months passed. The DNA test confirmed it99.9% chance Thomas was the father.
“And what of it?” Margaret laughed when I put the paper in front of her. “Yes, hes the father. But that doesnt mean Lilys setting foot in this house. Not a chance!”
Thomas stood there, staring at his hands. His face said it allhed chosen his mothers side. Silent, fists clenched, not a word of protest.
I rose slowly from the table. “If you two have made your decision, then hear mine.” My voice was low, sharp as a blade. “As long as I live, my grandchild will want for nothing. Ive got landIll build a house, and that child will inherit everything Ive worked for. But the two of you? Youll get nothing from me. I wont be part of this shame. Thomas, from today, youre no longer my son. Everything I have goes to the child. Not a single penny to you.”
Margaret exploded. “Have you lost your mind? Youd cut off your own son?”
I didnt answer. Just turned and walked away, ignoring her screams. Thomas stood there, stunned, unable to believe what hed just heard. But he knew one thingwhen I say something, I mean it.
**Lesson learned:** A mans worth isnt in his pride, but in his willingness to stand by whats righteven when it costs him everything.
