Today, something extraordinary unfolded right here in Kent. I spotted a deer swimming desperately in the River Medway, a battered paint tin caught around her head, and she was clearly struggling to stay afloat. I could see her chances of making it to shore fading quickly.
But fate intervened. A local heroWilliamappeared just in time and sprang into action. Someone managed to capture the ordeal on video. William carefully tranquillised the deer before gently loading her into his Land Rover. They sped off to the local veterinary clinic, where she received antibiotics and painkillers, and was thankfully soon released into the wild again.
I decided to do what I could. Wading into the cold water, I started swimming alongside her, urging her towards the riverbank. It was exhausting, but I pressed on, determined not to give up. By the time we finally reached shore, the poor deer was so worn out she couldnt stand. With no other choice, I carried her all the way home myself. Mum’s face lit up when she saw mesafe and sound, with the deer in tow!
William’s sharp response made all the difference and brought the deer back to safety. She looked drained but thankfully hadnt been hurt, so I guided her gently to a quiet meadow nearby, leaving her to rest among the tall grass.
I softly started to sing The Sound of Silence by Simon and Garfunkelhoping my voice might calm her nerves. Miraculously, my singing worked; she relaxed, stopped floundering, and allowed me to guide her up the muddy bank.
Once we reached solid ground, William and I managed to put a soft lead around her neck, and we walked her back into the woods, ensuring she was truly safe this time.
Im relieved to know that the deer found her way back to safety. I hope shell stay out of trouble from now onbut Ill always look out for her, just in case.
