He’s Furious His Ex is Getting Married, But I’m His Current Wife. How Should I React?

He’s furious that his ex is getting married. And I’m his current wife. How am I supposed to react to this?

Sometimes life throws you a drama no scriptwriter could dream up. My husband, James, came home with a face like thunder, tossed his keys onto the sideboard, and silently kicked off his shoes. It was completely unlike him—he’d just been to see his daughter, Lily, which usually left him glowing with happiness. Before I could even ask how the visit went, he exploded like a pressure cooker:

“Emma, you won’t believe this! I went to pick Lily up from nursery early to surprise her. Walked in, and some bloke was holding her hand! My blood ran cold—thought she was being snatched. Rushed over, ready to tear into him, and then… it was Olivia’s new boyfriend.”

My name is Emma, and I’ve known for years that James’s ex-wife, Olivia, was his unhealed wound. We’ve been married nearly six years, and we have a son, Alfie. But Olivia’s shadow has always loomed between us. James could never quite let go—running to her flat when she had a fever, sending her birthday flowers “from Lily” but signing his own name. The number of rows we’ve had over him being too tangled up in her life…

And now? She’s getting married. Finally. He should be relieved. Instead, he’s seething, pacing, and yanking at his hair like a madman.

“You know what he had the nerve to say? That it’s serious—they’re planning a wedding! This Daniel bloke’s divorced too, has a son, and reckons Olivia’ll make a great stepmum. Can you believe it?”

“Well, maybe she will. Aren’t you happy for her?” I asked softly, biting back a smug grin.

“Happy? Are you joking? What if he’s just like the rest? Marries her, then cheats? Lily doesn’t need to see that—she’s just a kid!” James ranted.

A thought crept in: What if Daniel’s actually the decent one? Stable, mature, dependable. I sneaked a look at Olivia’s socials—photos of her and Daniel, all smiles, kids, BBQs in the garden. His profile was open too—pictures with his son, work trips, no thirst traps or dodgy captions. Just a normal, respectable man.

I told James I wasn’t feeling well and went to bed early. Really, I put Alfie down, then sat in our room with the door ajar. Because I knew—he’d call Olivia. And he did.

“Liv, what’s all this about? You’re seriously doing this?” His voice carried from the kitchen.

Silence. Then James again:

“I don’t want you to have a husband… Think about me!”

I froze. This wasn’t about Lily. He wasn’t worried—he was jealous. Not of me. Of her. Of his ex. The one he left for a “fresh start” but never truly let go.

Lying in bed, staring at the ceiling, I felt everything crumbling. I’m his wife. The mother of his child. The one he shares a home, a future, the daily grind with. Yet there he was, begging another woman not to marry because it… hurt him.

People say jealousy means love. But who’s he loving?

Now I don’t know what to do. Pretend I didn’t hear a thing? Or ask him straight: Who’s in your heart—me, or Olivia? And what am I to you, if you still can’t let go of the woman who’s moved on?

James climbed into bed like nothing happened, pulling me close. But I lay there, stiff as a board, because I finally understood—I’m not the only one here. Physically, maybe. But in his head? Someone else still lives there. And it’s not me.

Is this love? Or is it just the fear of losing control over the woman he betrayed? Why do men lose their minds when an ex finds happiness? Why does it eat them alive, knowing someone else might give her what they couldn’t?

And more importantly—how am I supposed to live with it?
