How many times did I tell him he oughtnt marry her? Right before the wedding, I practically got down on my knees and begged him. Did he listen? Not a chance. He was hopelessly smitten. And now hes reaping the rewards.
A few days ago, my son rang me up. I could tell from his voice something was wrongits impossible to fool a mother. He asked if I could come over. Turns out, his darling wife, upon realising he was poorly, packed her bags and dashed off to her friends. Not a soul left to make him a cuppa or rustle up some chicken soup.
As if that werent enough, she wasnt even answering his calls. It was already late, but I hurried over nonetheless. I popped into the chemist for a few bits on the way, medicines and so forth. The whole time, I kept thinking about her. Fancy nipping off to see your friends while your husbands stuck in bed sweating buckets. My son was truly unwell. When I saw him, I nearly called for an ambulance, but he pleaded with me to hold off.
He looked dreadful. The flat was completely bare, not so much as a paracetamol in sight. Thank heavens I brought some food and tablets. It took everything in me not to shout. What sort of woman leaves her husband like this? Pills for slimming in the medicine drawer and a lonely echo in the fridge. I made him some strong tea, then dashed to the corner shop. He badly needed a bit of broth.
It was only after hed rested and eaten something that he began to perk up. His fever finally broke. And wouldnt you know, his beloved waltzed in at three in the morning, reeking of gin and good times. She must have had a cracking night out. She barely even heard a word I said about the medicine cabinet. I held my tongue, solely for my sons sakeone of us had to keep the peace. Though truth be told, he didnt look far from kicking up a proper fuss himself.
