How Can I Live Now? My Sister Turned Out to Be a Betrayer

How am I supposed to carry on? I don’t even know. My own sister turned out to be a traitor.

My husband and I were, as they say, thick as thieves. Everyone admired us—such a quiet, steady, warm couple. He was always polite to me, both at home and in public. Even my girlfriends were surprised, saying it wasn’t normal for a home to always be so peaceful. They’d joke, “It won’t last.” Back then, I just laughed it off. Should’ve known better… Must’ve been tempting fate.

It all fell apart without warning. It started when my younger sister hit a rough patch—she lost her job. Left with no income and a mountain of guilt, she was shattered. We’d always been close, especially after Mum passed, and I’d taken on a motherly role for her. Without a second thought, I invited her to stay with us until she got back on her feet. We set her up in the spare room.

At first, things were fine. But soon enough, the atmosphere at home turned odd. My husband grew tense, snappy. Nothing that used to make him happy seemed to matter anymore. The smile that always greeted me after work vanished. He started snapping over small things, complaining about my sister—cups left in the wrong place, laundry hung the wrong way.

It unsettled me, but I blamed it on stress. Once, I tried talking to my sister, gently suggesting she be more mindful of the household rhythm. She just nodded and said she understood.

And then it happened—the moment that changed everything.

That day, I came home from work earlier than usual. The flat was quiet. Assuming everyone was out, I headed to the bedroom—and my legs nearly gave way. There, in our bed, under our duvet, I found them. My husband. And my own flesh and blood.

They didn’t even have time to explain. I shut the door without a word and walked to the kitchen. My heart pounded like a drum, my ears ringing. In a single second, my world collapsed. Everything I’d built, everything I believed in, was a lie.

I didn’t scream. I didn’t make a scene. Just packed his things and left them by the door. As for my sister—I kicked her out right then. Her tears and excuses? I didn’t have the strength or the will to hear them. How could she do this to me? How could she wreck her own family—and mine?

Months have passed, and I still don’t have the answers. How do you survive a betrayal like this? How do you forgive—if forgiveness is even possible? My soul feels hollow. Everyone I cared about stabbed me in the back.

But I’m trying to carry on. Each day, breathing gets a little easier. They say time heals. I’m not so sure. But I believe—one day, I’ll learn to trust again. Just not so blindly.
