How My Husband Was Secretly Supporting His Mother While I Couldn’t Properly Clothe Our Child
Looking back, life was always a bit of a struggle for my husband and mewe did our best with what little we had. We both worked, but our pay packets were small; Id even say, meagre. We had a four-year-old daughter at the time. Anyone whos raised a small child knows how expensive it is, especially in our day and age. Simply making ends meet on a modest income was no easy feat.
To make matters worse, my husband decided to help his mother cover her rent. We were barely scraping by ourselves and yet somehow, we were sending money off to my mother-in-law. The woman was in perfectly good health and could have easily picked up a part-time job. Id have gone myself, but someone had to look after a small child after nursery hours. As often as I asked my mother-in-law to look after our daughter, she always refused, claiming she wasnt up to it, that she was poorly.
Then I found out my mother-in-law had gone off on holidaya rather extravagant one at that. My husband simply informed me, matter-of-factly, that while his mother was away, Id have to go all the way across town to take care of her house plants. To say I was taken aback would be an understatement. That time could have been spent earning extra money, rather than fussing over her flowers.
But that wasnt even the most shocking part. Of late, my mother-in-law had begun to act the part of a lady of leisure. Shed acquired expensive accessories, dresses from boutiques and more besides. Id always wondered where she found the money, since my husband was forever lamenting how his poor mother couldnt even pay her own rent. And all those resort trips? Perhaps shed found herself a wealthy benefactor.
Then, one day, I noticed my husband lugging about the same heavy bag week after week. Curiosity got the better of me, and, when he was in the bath, I had a peek inside. There was a collection of equipmentone laptop, I recognised straightaway as belonging to my friend. The next day at work, my friend mentioned that my husband was earning a bit on the siderepairing electronics and such.
So thats where the extra money was coming from! When I asked my husband outright whether every penny was going straight to his mother, he admitted it was.
So our daughter and I are patching up socks and can barely dress ourselves decently, while youre sending your mother on luxury holidays and buying her clothes from high-end shops?
“Thats my money. Ill spend it as I see fit,” he replied.
It goes without saying that I sent him packingwith his own money, no less. If he loved his mother so much, let him live with her. Isnt that only fair?
