You wont believe how Emily ended up becoming a mum, all thanks to her big heart
So, picture this: Emily arrives home one evening, steps into the block of flats, and spots a cardboard box right by her door. She peers at it curiously, completely puzzled. Inside, huddled together and shaking with fear, theres a dog and a cat peering up at her with wide, anxious eyes.
Whats this, then? Who are you lot? Emily asks out loud, half expecting the furry pair to answer back.
Just then, the door to the neighbouring flat swings open and out pops Mrs Parker, the kindly older lady from next door.
Oh, Emily, love, good evening. Youll never guess! Val from upstairs passed away, and her niece still hasnt managed to find a home for her pets.
Shes asked everyoneno one can take them. Ive got my own cat, couldnt possibly cope with another, and some of the others have allergies. Maybe you and Tom could help out? You dont have children, youre young, and youre both doing quite well for yourselves.
Emily felt totally caught off guard. We never really thought about getting petsespecially two at once…
Mrs Parker looked at her, almost pleading, They shouldnt be split up, love. Theyve always been together. Even slept in the same basket. Val used to walk the dog, and the cat just roamed about. Theyre really no trouble.
Maybe just think about it? Mrs Parker added, her tone turning properly gentle and hopeful.
And if we dont? Emily couldnt help but ask. Whatll happen to them?
Mrs Parkers eyes dropped and she said, Well, theres talk of taking them to the shelter where… you know, they might not get much of a chance. Vals flats practically sold already, and the new owners certainly dont want them.
At that moment, another neighbour entered, glanced at Emily, then at the box.
Would you maybe take them in? Theyre quiet. Hardly eat anything. And theyre getting on a bit, bless them. Wont trouble you for years. No one else wants them… Itd be a real kindness. Val doted on those two.
Oh, alright then, bring them in. I cant bear the thought of them ending up in a shelter, Emily replied, sighing. What are their names, anyway? Weve only been here a couple of years, never got to know everyone.
He brightened, carried the box into Emilys hallway, and said, The dog is Charlie and the cats Oscar. Thank you so much. He popped a twenty-pound note and a lead on the hall table. Just something to help get you started, and thank you again…
Emily shut the door, hung up her coat, then crouched down in front of her new, unexpected housemates.
Well, lads, Tom is going to fall over backwards when he sees you two. I do hope he doesnt throw me out as well… But hes a good soul, I think hell come round.
Dont worry, boys, Im not going to let anyone hurt you. Code to take you away to be put down, honestly some people… she said softly.
It was as if Oscar the cat had understoodhe gingerly climbed out of the box and started prowling about, inspecting his new home. Charlie the dog, though, stayed frozen for a bit, just watching Emily and his feline mate.
Emily popped into the kitchen and checked the fridgeno surprise, nowhere near enough pet food. So she rustled up some porridge, chopped in a bit of meat, and figured thatd do for now.
To her relief, Oscar soon strolled in, acted intrigued by the food laid out in a big bowl, and got tucked in. Emily gently called Charlie over next.
He hesitated, but seeing Oscar wolfing down the meat, he padded over, gave her the saddest eyes, and started joining in.
Soon, Tom, Emilys husband, arrived home from work. He was honestly floored by the sight, but the two of them decided theyd try to find a more spacious homemaybe a house with a gardenfor the pets, just in case someone came along.
Emily and Tom had been married for four years, and only bought their flat a couple of years ago. They were happy, never really bickering, but the one thing missing was children. It weighed on them both.
Youre always so house-proud, Em. I thought you didnt want any pets at all, Tom said, genuinely surprised.
I thought wed have a child by now, not two furry lodgers… But then I heard whatd happen otherwise. I honestly cant bear it. Sorry, love.
Tom wrapped her up in a hug. Its alright. I love animals, too. Well look after them, see if any of my mates at work might be able to take them in.
Life changed after that. Charlie and Oscar settled in quicklyturns out their old flat was right above Emily and Toms, so the layout was identical, and the courtyard exactly the same.
Youre proper little stars, you are, Emily told them. Feels like youve always lived here.
She started walking Charlie three times a day, and Oscar had already mastered going out the window for his little expeditions, always coming home through the same route, which Emily secretly loved.
Mrs Parker watched all this with a big grin, popping round every now and then with a bone from Sundays roast for Charlie or leftovers for Oscar.
In the evenings, Emily and Tom delighted in watching Oscar bat around his new toys, while Charlie snored away contentedly on his new bed.
The two always slept curled up together. Watching them, Emily and Tom realised separating them really would have been unthinkable.
In a couple of months, Emily and Tom didnt even dream about finding them another home. They couldnt imagine life without their furry duo.
Emilys mum, who lived nearby, would often pop round on weekends. At first, she was a bit shocked at the new additions, but soon enough, she fell in love with both.
Id have taken the cat myself, but on the third floor, and hes just too keen on his adventures, she told Emily.
Emily shook her head. Not happening, mum. Youll come round when we need a holidaythatll help loads. You can water the plants and keep an eye on them.
Summer came, and Emily and Tom went off to Cornwall for a week. Emily called her mum nearly every day, worried about her two charges.
Its all fine, lovetheyre eating, sleeping together, and Charlie loves his walks in the courtyard. You just relax! her mum reassured her.
When Emily and Tom returned, Charlie greeted them by wagging his tail, jumping up, and all but singing with happiness.
Oscar, after letting Charlie have his moment, gave Toms legs a proper purr and weave.
Well, look at thatthey really do love us, dont they? Tom laughed, giving Charlie a good belly rub while Emily dished out dinner.
After a while, Emily was waking up earlierto make sure Charlie had a good walk before breakfast, and that everyone was fed and happy.
Then, a couple of months later, Emily, heart pounding, shared the news with Tom: she was expecting! They were both absolutely over the moon.
Emilys mum remarked cheerfully, See, I told youCharlie and Oscar were sent your way for a reason. A heaven-sent little test of your kindness, love. And look, things have turned out just right!
Emily laughed, Maybe youre right, mum. Im not one for fate and that, but having the pets did make me feel more ready. Looking after them is like a crash course in caring for someone littlefeeding, cleaning up, the cuddles They really are like children!
Her mum offered, If you want me to take them at first, just so its easier for you after the baby arrives, you only have to say.
No, honestly, well manage. Come round instead and take the pram for a spin, or help out at ours with a cuddle when the baby sleeps.
They hugged it out.
Emilys pregnancy went without a hitch, and in good time she gave birth to a beautiful little boy. Tom was beaming, Emily was glowing, and the whole family was chuffed to bits.
Charlie, ever the gent in his old age, never barked, and Oscar couldnt be easieralways out in the garden or up the big old lime tree, sunning himself.
And thats how their family came together, just right. Mrs Parker and her friends now tell everyone on the street how Emily became a mum because of her kindness, and I reckon theres something in that. Its almost proof, isnt it, that what you put into the world comes back to you
What do you think? Do you reckon Mrs Parker might be onto something? Give us a thumbs up if you agreeMaybe she is. Because from then on, Emily noticed little ways her world seemed to brighten. Morning sunbeams always found their way to Charlies favourite rug. Oscar brought tiny bouquets of wildflowers in on his fur. Passing neighbours smiled wider and lingered longer at the gate, wanting to help, wanting to share. Emilys heart had stretched to make spacefirst for two lost pets, then for a wholeness she hadnt known was missing.
On crisp autumn mornings, when the garden shimmered in gold and the baby giggled in his buggy with Oscar and Charlie beside him, Emily felt a quiet certainty: this was exactly where she was meant to be. And sometimes, as she watched her sons tiny hand reach out to stroke Charlies ear, or Oscar curl protectively at his feet, she thought of Mrs Parkers words.
Maybe kindness really does come full circle, weaving lives together in the most unexpected, wonderful ways. And maybe, just maybe, a big heart is all you ever need to beginbecause in the end, it turns out, the very best families are made from love, loyalty, and a leap of faith.
