How to Start Anew

Where on earth are you off to looking so glamorous? demanded Janet Grant, her voice tight with barely concealed irritation. Her eyes flicked to the clock hanging over the kitchen dooralmost eight in the evening. Do you even realise what time it is?

Bella simply smiled faintly, her gaze fixed on the mirror. With deft fingers, she tucked a stray strand of hair behind her ear, then slowly turned to her mother. She was steeling herself for an uncomfortable exchange that, despite its unpleasantness, had become routinea drill she had long since mastered the art of tuning out.

Mum, I havent been sixteen for a long time, she said, her tone calm, a gentle crease at the corner of her lips. Im a grown woman now. I dont owe you an explanationat least, not anymore.

Janets face stiffened with outrage; new creases etched her brow, and her lips pressed into a thin, pale line. This girlhow dare she speak to her like that?

Youre still living under my roof! came Janets retort, her voice rising, thick with incredulity. Her daughter talking back to her was something she simply wouldnt abide. And by the way… whos meant to look after your child, hmm? If you think Ill be running around after an unruly eight-year-old boy who has zero respect for me, you are very much mistaken!

Janets entire posture radiated her annoyance at this situation. Her daughter, acting all grown upwho gave her permission for such cheek? Wasnt it Bella, after all, whod come crawling back to her childhood home, begging for help after the divorce?

I just want to sit and watch some telly in peace, have a proper cuppa, not… Janet flung her arms dramatically, as if trying to encompass all the chaos she insisted would erupt in her grandsons wake. Not chase him about, bribe him to do homework, or listen to endless complaints! Do you even know how exhausting it is? Every night: he wont eat, hes bored, homeworks apparently the greatest injustice since sliced bread. Am I supposed to sort this mess?

Thats quite enough! snapped Bella, and her face transformed in an instant. The gentle irony and calm vanished, replaced by purposeful resolve. Harrys staying over at Sophies house. And just so you know, youll be the very last person Id ever ask to watch my son. I dont want him growing up with that sort of examplekids pick up on everything, you realise.

Janet stood frozen, barely believing her ears. Then, theatrically, she clutched at her chest and threw her head back in mock agony, exaggerating her distress so much it would have been laughable if the moment wasnt razor-tight with tension.

Well, thats a turn, isnt it! Janet exclaimed, voice trembling as she painted herself as the wounded party. I made room for you when you traipsed back here after your marriage collapsed! Gave you shelter, your own room, did everything for youeverythingand this is the thanks I get?

She paused, clearly hoping Bella might waver or show a glimmer of guilt. But Bella didnt even blink. She knew her mothers tricks too well to fall for them again. Not this time.

You do recall, dont you, that a quarter of this house is actually mine? Bella interjected, cutting off Janets rant before it could gather steam. Youre not the only one who owns this placeIm perfectly entitled to live here, whether you like it or not.

She took silent pleasure in the look of stunned disbelief on her mothers face. Did Janet really think she would keep begging, hoping for crumbs of approval?

And you, for your part, have no right whatsoever to stop me using the house, Bella continued, a hint of satisfaction creeping into her voice as long-restrained words finally spilled out. Anger made her fumble with the clasp of her handbag, her hands trembling, but she forced herself to keep control.

And by the way, were not staying for long, she added, locking her gaze with Janets. A few weeks, a month, max. So do try to bear with ityou wont even remember we were here.

Janet laughed, sharp and mocking, her scoff bouncing off the hallway walls. Bella couldnt help but flinch. Janet folded her arms and looked her daughter up and down, withering scorn radiating from her every pore.

So where are you going to go? Janet drawled, every syllable thick with condescension. Youve got nothing, love. Couldnt take out a mortgage if you triedno deposit, nowhere to get it from.

She paused, letting silence sink in like so many nails in a coffin lid, then delivered her final blow: Your clever ex-husband had the wit to put the house in his mothers nameleft you with nothing in the end. Naïve as you are… its almost embarrassing to call you my daughter! Feels like I failed you.

A knot twisted in Bellas stomach, but she was determined not to show it. She clenched the handle of her bag so tightly her knuckles blanched, forced herself to breathe deep, and replied in the steadiest voice she could muster:

Thats none of your business, she said icily, her voice threatening to crack with pent-up frustration, but she kept her cool. Im not that silly girl anymore. And by the waysupergranHarry left hours ago.

Without waiting for an answer, Bella spun around and strode quickly to the door. The clip of her heels echoed through the deserted hallway as she hurried down the stairs, desperate to be gone from this housea place she could only with enormous generosity ever have called welcoming.

Outside, the evening was brisk, but Bella hardly noticed. Anger burned through her, blurring her vision, tightening her chest. She walked, not caring where, as long as it put distance between her and that house, that woman who insisted on calling herself her mother. Her mood was ruined, a dark cloud blotting out any hint of colour or happiness.

How did I end up with a mother like her? Bella muttered silently, balling her fists. The thought looped through her head, over and again. She knew someone would probably judge her for thinking that, call her ungrateful or disrespectful. But none of that mattered now. Deep down, she was becoming certain: sometimes, its better to have no mother at all than a mother like Janet Grantone who offered blame instead of support, mockery instead of kindness, and calculation in place of love.

To anyone meeting Janet for the first time, she made a wonderful impression. Warm smiles, kind words, listening attentively, nodding as if she truly cared. In the neighbourhood, she had everyones respectalways ready to lend a hand, whether it be advice, a cup of sugar, or a reassuring pat on the arm and a breezy Oh, itll all be alright, dont you worry.

But those who knew her well saw another side entirely. Behind that courteous smile loomed a woman of hard rules and rigid standardsa stickler for control whose opinion was always right, everyone elses always suspect. She spoke her mind with biting bluntness and, if challenged, her gaze frosted over and her words took on the edge of steel.

From early childhood, Bella had lived by her mothers rules. Janet decided everything: what she wore, what after-school clubs she joined, which friends were acceptable. Even her friends were carefully vetted, as if for a vital position.

You shouldnt be friends with that girl, Janet would pronounce, barely hiding her disapproval over a new classmate from a single-parent home. Not the right crowd.

And that boys a troublemaker, shed add about a cheeky neighbour. Only bad can come of friends like that.

But one girl received her blessing without hesitation. Now shes suitableher mums on the council, good job. Those are connections worth making.

When it came to choosing a career, Janet didnt even bother consulting Bellas wishes. The decision was made: Bella would study medicine. End of discussion. Whether Bella liked the sound of it or even wanted to help people didnt matter. Even her stark terror at the sight of blood, which had made her faint since childhood, was dismissed as melodrama.

Youre pretending, Janet declared, raising a doubtful brow. You just want to wriggle out of responsibility.

Bella tried to explain, but Janet refused to listen; objections were nothing but weakness to her.

So, faced with no choice, Bella took the only way out she could see: she got married. Shed just turned eighteen and accepted, almost without a second thought, when a boy she knew proposed. There was no time to weigh up options, hesitations, or uncertaintyshe just needed to escape. Escape the constant scrutiny, the feeling that her life didnt belong to her, but to her mother.

She was aware marriage was serious, that it meant real responsibility, but it seemed the only path to a little freedom. Anything to get out of that house, where her every move was criticised and dreams were foreign things.

Unsurprisingly, Bellas marriage to James didnt last long. At first, the honeymoon months were full of optimism and plans, but soon cracks appeared. The couple were woefully unprepared for the realities of marriage.

It began with petty argumentsover the washing up, whod run to Tesco, how money should be spent. Then things got worse: James started working late, coming home reeking of lager, snapping at any attempt at conversation. Bella tried to talk, to find out what went wrong, but James just brushed her off.

Its nothing, dont fuss. Im just tired.

When Harry was born, things only deteriorated further. Sleepless nights, constant crying, exhaustioneverything escalated quickly. Rows became daily occurrences. Sometimes it was shouting matches until they were both hoarse, sometimes theyd go silent, avoiding each other for days.

Before long, Bella realised James was cheating on her. Worse, he made no attempt to hide it. One evening, he breezed in late and calmly announced, Met someonenothing serious, but… If you want to go, go.

Bella stood there, holding a sleeping Harry, lost for words. She wanted to scream, slap him, demand answersbut all she could do was nod numbly and tuck her son in for the night.

There was nowhere for her to go. Her father was gone, and her only relative, her mother, was hardly an option. None of her friends were in a position to take in a woman and a little boy. So she stayed. Endured his coming and going, his indifference, his jibes. She sometimes cried into her pillow at night, careful not to wake Harry.

Shed left college shortly before Harrys birthbarely half a year in. Juggling her studies and a baby became impossible, and soon her whole life was about making ends meet.

When Harry started school, Bella saw a sliver of possibilityshe could return to college, at least part-time. After some thought, she chose a bookkeeping course at the local technical college. A far cry from her old dreams, but a step towards paying her way, being independent.

Evenings were a blur of textbooks and lectures after work, often nodding off over chapter headings. Every time she managed a good grade, though, hope flared anewperhaps one day, things really would be better, and shed finally control her own life.

A few years on, with Harry steadily growing more independent and her certificate in hand, Bella found courage to file for divorce. She had a jobnot perfect, but steady. Harry was thriving at school. All she now needed was a roof overhead.

Private renting in her town was extortionate, with her salary barely stretching to the basics. Thats when she remembered her share in her parents house. Legally, she couldnt be refused a place thereit was the only viable option that wouldnt leave her penniless.

The thought of sharing space with her mother filled her with dread and nostalgia in equal measurethe home she grew up in, and yet the very place shed always been told what she could and couldnt be.

But there was no alternative. Bella braced herself and rang her mother…

*************************

Youre mad to go back there, warned her friend Sophie, fiddling nervously with the edge of the kitchen tablecloth. And think of Harry! Your mums hardly a saint; shell make mincemeat of him! You know how she treats himstrict rules, constant demands, and Harrys too spirited for that.

Bella was silent, gazing at the window as the first frost flecks danced outside, whispering promises. She drew breath, gathered herself, and turned to Sophie.

Its just for a few months, she replied, wincing a little. Her words were laced with tiredness, but determination too. I get you, Soph. Mum is… well, she is who she is. But theres simply no choice. Well move out soon enough, and after that, she can ring me if she wants to. Im done making the effort.

Sophie leaned back, eyeing Bella with concern. There was something unsettling about how matter-of-factly Bella spoke, too measured given the situation.

Whats the plan in a couple of months? Sophie probed gently, tilting her head. You sound like youre a step ahead. Not like you, considering how things are.

Bellas lips curved slightlynot a broad smile, more like a secret flickered deep inside her. She reached for her mug of tea, sipped, giving herself a moment.

Im not as hopeless as Mum thinks, she said, meeting Sophies gaze. And for my sons sake, Ill do far more than she expects. To be honest, theres someone whos been making his interest clear.

She paused, spotting Sophies eyes light up with curiosity. Her friend opened her mouth to ask for a name, but Bellas gentle hand raised a caution.

Dont be offended, but Im keeping names to myselfjust for now, she said, apologetically. Its not that I dont trust you… I just want to be sure. At the moment I have a good feeling. This might be my chance.

Sophie nodded without pushing further, though her interest was obvious. She respected her friends privacy.

And, Bella went on, sitting a little straighter, her eyes suddenly sparking with resolve, I wont let this slip by, no matter what. I cant live in this constant strain, cant watch Harry suffer through Mums lectures. I have to give him something bettera real home, a mum who isnt split in half all the time. If that means risking it, I will.

Every word she spoke was loaded with conviction, not showy bravado but the hard-earned clarity of someone whod run through every scenario, weighed every option.

Sophie reached over the table and squeezed her hand gently.

I believe in you, she said simply, warmly. But promise me youll be careful, alright?

Bella nodded, warmth blossoming inside her at the show of support. The future was a blank page, but now she was certainthere was no turning back.

Do you even fancy him a little? Sophie teased after a moments pause, her voice more soft than curious, anxiety for her friend plain. You jumped into marriage last time just to escape your mum… and look how that panned out. Maybe you and Harry could stay at mine for a bit? Its not huge, but theres spaceand Matt from next door would love to have Harry round.

Bella twirled her mug absently, looking out at the black velvet night, streetlights casting their familiar glow. She met Sophies gaze, and, for the first time in ages, her smile was genuine.

Hes a really good bloke, she answered, quietly but with conviction. He likes me, adores kids. He has a son, just a couple years older than Harry. Funny enough, thats how we metat the playground. The boys played together, we chatted. Started off talking about kids, then… well, everything and nothing.

Her eyes softened at the memory of easy conversations, laughter at Harrys antics, the sheer absence of judgement or superiority. Thered only been kindness.

Its just… easy with him, you know? Bella mused, staring thoughtfully. He never tries to fix me, or push Harry around. He helps when he can, listens, makes the effort without complaint. Hes great with his own son, toonever shouts, explains everything, reads with him, plays games

Sophie watched her carefully, noticing the renewed liveliness that had been missing from Bellas face for so long.

And yes, Im sure, Bella said firmly, locking eyes with Sophie. This is my decision, and this time, Ive really thought it through. I want a better life for myself and for Harry. But its not running awayits stepping towards something real. A family where were valued and loved.

She let out a deep sigh, as if laying down a weight shed carried for years.

I understand youre worried, Soph, and I cant tell you how grateful I am for your offerbut I have to try. If not now, when?

Without another word, Sophie squeezed Bellas hand.

Fair enough. If youre sure, Ill back you all the way. But promiseyouve always got a bed with me if things change, alright?

A wave of gratitude washed over Bella. She pressed Sophies hand in return.

Thank you, she whispered. That means a lot…

********************

Bella was quite right; she ended up staying at her mothers for barely two months before life took an unexpected and joyous turn: Michael proposed. It was the chance shed hoped for all alongthe chance to begin her own story afresh. Her things were packed at lightning speed: a few holdalls of clothes, Harrys beloved toys, and all the little essentials. Within hours, they were readyas if fate itself was hurrying them out the door.

None was happier than Harry. Hed never made a secret of his dislike for his overbearing grandmother. Her constant criticism, strict routines, and obsessive need to control had long since worn his patience thin. Hed glare at her comments, slam doors, or retreat to his room at the first sign of trouble. Now, his eyes shonehe could finally stop pretending and simply be himself.

When Janet heard her daughter was engaged again, she exploded with fury. She insisted on meeting her would-be son-in-law. Her voice quivered with disapproval: I need to meet him! If I dont approve, therell be no wedding! Youre not making another mistake on my watch!

Bella repliedcalmly, resolutely: Mum, its my life. You wont be meeting him.

The refusal set Janet off. She stormed outside so every neighbour within earshot could hear her outrage. She hollered her complaintsabout Bellas recklessness, ingratitude, lack of common sensefor the entire street to hear.

People whod only ever known Janet as the mild, well-put-together lady who always lent a hand or minded someones children stopped in their tracks. Some tried to console her, murmuring that family drama wasnt worth the upset, but were met with sharp words for their trouble. Dismayed, the neighbours drifted away, shaking their heads and whispering, Well, I never. Always seemed so calm

Later Janet tried to excuse herself, phoning friends to explain shed got a bit carried away, that she only wanted the best for Bella, but the old, gentle reputation didnt quite return. Now she was the woman whod made an almighty scene for all to see.

As for Bellashe was finally happy. Her second marriage was everything she could have wished for: warm, supportive, full of mutual understanding. Michael wasnt just kind and attentivehe was a pillar, for both her and Harry. She no longer felt the need to tiptoe round someones moods or justify her every move.

She even fulfilled another long-held dream: starting at university. It wasn’t easy, juggling studies with work and home life, but every morning, opening a textbook or sitting in lectures, Bella felt a bright spark inside herthe one her mother once smothered by insisting medicine was the only respectable path. Now she studied exactly what she loved, and it filled her with purpose.

A new job came along toonothing spectacular, but stable with friendly colleagues and room for growth. She learned to budget, even save a little for the rainy days. That small savings pot was more than just financial safetyit signified newfound freedom, and hope.

Sometimes she thought back to the night she bolted from her childhood home and couldnt help but smile to herself. Life now was everything shed once been afraid to even imagine: a loving husband, happy son, a job, her studies, and, best of all, a sense of living her own life at last. Yes, there would still be tough daysbut Bella knew now that she would manage.

Because now she was finally in charge of her own future.
