My husband has decided to keep the kids after the divorce. Fine, let him…
I was married to Andrew for over ten years. We went through a lot together—joys and hurts—but we never cheated on one another. We have two children: an older son and a younger daughter, who just turned three. I truly believed we had a strong family since living loyally by each other’s side for so many years is rare. Then, out of the blue, I discovered my husband had a mistress. It was all dreadfully typical and disgusting—he simply betrayed me. My love, trust, hopes—he crushed them all like useless trash. I didn’t scream or create a scene; I just filed for divorce. Staying with him was impossible.
At first, Andrew resisted, pleaded, asked me not to rush. He insisted it was a mistake, that everything could go back to how it was. But I had made my decision. A heart once broken doesn’t mend. Then he said, “Alright. Go ahead with the divorce. But the kids stay with me.” Initially, I didn’t understand what he meant. But he was serious—he stated he could provide them a future, while I couldn’t even support myself.
I was in shock at first. But once the emotions subsided, I thought—maybe he’s right? Andrew has his own apartment from his mother, a good job, a car. And me? I recently returned to work after maternity leave, my salary’s laughable, I’m in a rented flat with bills piling up. I wouldn’t be able to manage two kids on my own. I don’t want to drag them into poverty and hardship. If they stay with him, they’ll have everything: food, a roof over their heads, clothing, stability.
I didn’t give up; I made a choice—for the sake of the children. We went to court together. The divorce was swift, without scandals. Andrew refused alimony, saying he could manage on his own. I promised to help in any way I could. Our son struggled initially—he understood a lot. Little Kate took some time to realize that I no longer lived with them. Every weekend I’d visit, take them with me, give them as much warmth as I could.
In the beginning, Andrew called a hundred times a day. Asked how to feed them, put them to bed, complained about being tired. Then the calls gradually stopped, and after a couple more months, they vanished altogether. During this time, I managed to rent a place, settled into a new job, and slowly started to get back on my feet.
Two months later, Andrew declared he’d changed his mind: he was overwhelmed, the kids got in the way of his personal life, he was exhausted. Now he wanted me to take them back. Apparently, he didn’t sign up for this.
I listened in disbelief. The one who shouted about his “responsibility,” who assured he’d give the kids everything, now just wants to hand them back like unwanted items? And yes, he accused me of “abandoning” the kids. Called me a bad mother. But I’m not a bad mother. I just refuse to follow the path of countless women who sacrifice their health and sanity just to meet others’ expectations.
He betrayed me first. He broke our family. So why should I bear everything alone now? I’m no hero. I’m an ordinary woman. And my children have a father. Let him share the burden.
I love my children. Deeply. But I made a rational, conscious choice. Maybe some will judge me. But I have no regrets. I didn’t abandon my kids. I gave them a chance at stability. Time will tell who was right.
