My husband told me today that hes tired of me, and Ive changed so much that Im bored of him.
Almost two years ago I heard a line from John that Ill never be able to forget: You live so predictably that Im bored with you. Even though he thought our life was dull, I was content with it. Each morning I rise early, have tea and toast, do my exercises and get dressed for work. The first thing I do is get John ready for his early commute, then I finish my own preparations. All our meals are cooked at home; I pack a secondbreakfast in containers for both of us. On my way back each evening I pop into the corner shop, then I cook, clean and do the laundry. Before bed we watch a film and drift off.
Im convinced Im right. Everything feels perfect: my husband is wellkept and fed, the house is tidy and comfortable. What more could I want? Every Saturday I do a deep clean of the whole house, bake something delicious and cook a big meal. In the evenings we invite friends over or head out into town. On Sundays we visit our parents half the day with one set of folks, the other half with the other. We help them with chores, chat, and enjoy the time with family.
Evenings are spent relaxing at home. We never argue or raise our voices. Our home is a haven of harmony and peace. But then, one day, John declares that hes bored with me. For hours he tells me hes dissatisfied, citing friends who party all night, live carefree and feel fulfilled unlike us, who never even argue. So that afternoon he simply walks out.
Im completely satisfied with how weve been living and dont want any change. Yet, for Johns sake, Im ready to do anything, even reinvent myself. I start by overhauling my appearance. I clear out my wardrobe, spend the money saved for a new cottage on a flood of new clothes, cut my hair short and dye it a bold shade. I decide I wont look boring any longer. Then I find a new job, not the usual office role but a position organizing events. The job opens up a world of original entertainment.
A week later John returns, stunned by what he sees. I promise him that well live a completely different life, and we do. Since then we rarely stay at home. Were constantly on the move, making new acquaintances, hitting clubs, restaurants, pubs, parties, friends flats or wherever the night takes us. We go camping, cycle, paddleboard, even take weekend trips to Manchester or Brighton.
Months pass in this lively rhythm, and John suddenly longs for quiet, for the comfort of staying home. He tells me he misses homecooked meals and my baking. I no longer have any time to stand at the stove. Ive changed so much that he no longer misses my company.
A week later John says he cant keep up with this active pace. He wants to return to the old, peaceful days evenings at home, weekends visiting his parents and eating fresh, homemade food instead of reheated takeaway.
But Ive lost interest in that. Ive grown accustomed to adult responsibilities, and I dont want to revert to a life Ive left behind. My current lifestyle suits me perfectly. I also liked my previous routine, but I wouldnt trade it now. When John insists on restoring everything to how it was, a real showdown erupts.
In the end his dream of a quiet domestic life shatters: dishes are broken, neighbours call the police, and John packs his bags and heads to his mothers house, perhaps hoping Ill revert to the old me. That would be too much. Were not movie characters who can change on a whim. John comes back home to find divorce papers on the kitchen table and a note that says hes bored and I cant live with him any longer.
