Husband Urgently Wanted

Urgently Needed: A Husband

Mum, you need to find yourself a new husband! Really, really urgently!

Claire nearly dropped her mug of teathe liquid sloshed dangerously and she hastily set it down on the table. She coughed, cleared her throat, and levelled a searching look at her daughter.

Explain to me whats going on, she said, doing her best to keep her voice steady. What brought this on?

The girl shifted from foot to foot, her eyes lowered as she traced the pattern on the carpet with the tip of her toe. Emily was clearly embarrassed, though she seemed certain she was doing the right thing.

Well I sort of told Dad today that you have a man in your life, she admitted with a heavy sigh. He simply wore me out with all his questions! Hes always asking if youve found someone new yet. Ive been saying no all this time and then he starts going on and on about what a huge mistake you made, leaving him. How you dont know whats good for you, if you could let such a wonderful man go!

She looked up at her mum. In her eyes swirled frustration, confusion, and even a flash of anger towards her father.

And he keeps saying he says youll soon understand how wrong you were and that youll come back. That youll never find anyone better. I just I snapped. I said you had met someone.

Claire ran a hand through her hair. Instantly, she recalled her ex-husbands familiar tonethe self-assured pomposity, the way hed hijack a conversation and turn it into a monologue about his own virtues.

I can just imagine the colourful language he used, she remarked with a trace of irony. He still cant accept that I left someone as flawless as himself. Sometimes I think Ben insists on you visiting at weekends just for his own little performances. Hes not interested in spending time with you, just in getting the latest gossip and soothing his ego.

Emily heaved a sigh and flopped onto the sofa, tucking her legs beneath her. She absent-mindedly stroked the soft fabric of the cushion, gathering her thoughts.

Thats what I think, too, she said, staring into space. I have to listen to him talk about how amazing he is for over an hour. The rest of the time he basically ignores medoesnt even ask whats going on in my life, how school is, if I need anything

Emily spoke as if describing the laundry: get up, breakfast, school, homework. It had all become routinea routine so entrenched that, for her, it barely registered.

She leaned back and gazed at the ceiling, replaying her most recent conversation with her father. As usual, it started with his latest triumpha detailed account of smart business negotiations. Next came his plans for the future, his work troubles, and the general underappreciation he endured. Ninety minutes straighteven Emily mentally clocked it, just so she could relay it to her mum later.

When she attempted to tell him about her success in the school maths challenge, he only nodded absently before steering the conversation back to himself. Well done, but you know at your age I And so began another string of tales about his glory days.

She shrugged, banishing the thought. She was long used to this reality. As far back as she could remember, her father was entirely absorbed by himself. Everyone else in the family existed on the periphery; important, perhaps, but never enough to truly divert his attention.

Whatever anyone said, it always came back to his own issues. If Mum complained of being tired, hed launch into just how exhausting his week had been at work. If Emily tried to confide about her friends, hed pivot to his own school storiesnaturally, far more exciting. Other peoples troubles barely registered.

Emily couldnt fathom how her mother had endured fifteen years living beside such a man. He seemed nothing short of obsessed with his own brilliance! Maybe Mum stuck it out for her sake, not wanting her to grow up without a father. As a girl, Emily genuinely believed Dad would change one dayshow some interest in their lives. But nothing changed as the years passed. Only after the divorce did she realise how much calmer life could be without such constant competition for attention.

So why am I supposed to start hunting for a man? Claires voice was sharper than she perhaps meant. You said what you saidwhats the problem?

You should have seen Dad when I told him! Emily winced, clutching a stray cushion to her chest. He went totally red and started shoutingloud enough for the neighbour to come running! Honestly, he scared me a little.

She paused, replaying the scene: her fathers loud and strangely high-pitched voice, fists clenched, eyes darting. He looked as if he might explode with feeling.

He demanded the blokes name and description, Emily went on, fiddling with the cushions edge. I said I couldnt tell him. That youd asked me not toespecially not him. Wouldnt be surprised if he starts ringing you soon and having a go.

Claire turned to the window, braced her hands on the sill, and eyed her daughter. What a day she had ahead She could picture Ben in full meltdown mode. Well, thanks for that, love.

She slumped onto the sofa beside Emily, pulling her into a hug. What could she do now? The words were out and couldnt be called back.

Why did you make it up? she asked gently, rocking her daughter. We had some peace at last. Now well have to listen to another round of his tantrums. Makes me want to turn my phone off altogether.

Emily wriggled carefully out of her mums embrace, sat up straight, and fixed her with a steady gaze. A determined light glowed in her eyes.

Because youre wonderful, Mum! she declared. Youre beautiful, clever, youve got loads of friends and all the men notice you! Dont think I havent seen it. But Dad just says nasty things about you all the time. Im sick of it.

Claire affectionately stroked her daughters hair, twining the soft locks through her fingers, her expression a mix of tenderness and mild surprise.

I see, sweetheart, I see, she murmured. Honestly, I thought you wouldnt want me to rush into a new relationship. Its only been six months since the divorce.

It hurt even to admit it. Part of her worried Emily would see another romance as a betrayal or a clumsy attempt to replace her dad. Claire studied her daughters face, watching for a flicker of disapproval.

Dont be silly! Emily snorted, so confidently that Claire couldnt help but smile. What matters is that youre happy.

Emily crossed her arms, grinning at her mum. She looked strikingly grown-up in that momentwise beyond her years and ready to defend her beliefs.

Claire watched her daughter, feeling her worries slowly melt away. Emily sounded so sure of herself that even Claires doubts began to fade. Maybe she had spent too much time dwelling on the past, afraid of moving forward.

You clever girl, Claire said quietly, hugging Emily to her side. Thank you for looking after your mum.

Emily snuggled into her, comfortable and safe. In that moment, both of them felt something shifta growing warmth between them, as if, somehow, their small family was growing stronger by the day.

Back at work, Claire sat at her desk, trying to focus on an accounting report. The lines on the screen blurred as a low, persistent headache hammered at her templessomething shed felt coming on all morning, now blossoming into a full ache by lunchtime. She rubbed her forehead wearily, almost automaticallyshed already lost count of how many times today.

Finally, she gave up and asked a colleague to nip to Bootsthe pharmacy was only a couple of minutes from the office. When her colleague came back, Claire quickly downed the tablets with a gulp of water and attempted once more to concentrate on the paperwork. It was useless. Every noisethe clatter of the keyboard, the hum of the air conditioning, the distant chatter in the corridorsent fresh waves of pain through her skull.

At that moment, the security guard poked his head in. He looked polite but a little wary.

Ms. Turner, theres a gentleman here to see youyour ex-husband, I think? Hes insisting. Shall we send him away or… will you come down?

Claire froze. Irritation surged inside her, mingled with fatigue. She took a deep breath, trying to keep calm.

Ill come down now. Sorry to trouble you, she said as she rose from her chair.

She cursed inwardly. Why now? Her day was already going badly, her head throbbed, and now Ben had turned up without warning. Why hadnt he called, instead of marching right into her workplace? Did he really hope to make a scene in the lobby?

She walked slowly towards the exit, acutely aware that any quick movement would only make her headache worse. The corridor was bustlingcolleagues on errands, someone laughing by the coffee machine, others huddled around the notice board. Every step made her shoulders tense a little more.

In the lobby, Claire spotted Ben immediately. He was pacing, back and forth from the reception desk, gesticulating wildly, sometimes raising his voice to the security officers. They were trying to remain polite but were clearly on the verge of stepping in more firmly.

What do you want? Claire asked, skipping the pleasantries. Her tone was calm, but inside, irritation simmered. Whats this performance? Want to get to know the local police? I can arrange it.

Ben spun round at her voice. His face was flushed, eyes burningwhether from anger or anxiety, it was hard to tell. He strode towards her, jabbing a finger in her direction as if hed caught her doing something criminal.

You! he bellowed. You! Emily told me everything! Six months since the divorce and already youve got yourself a new man?

His voice was a tangled mess of disbelief, hurt, and jealousy. Hed obviously hoped Emily had been joking, but faced with Claires calm, he realised it wasnt a game.

Claire raised her eyebrows and cocked her head to the side. Her body language was relaxed, but her gaze grew cold.

Am I meant to stay true to you forever? Even after our divorce? she replied evenly. Thats a bit much, loveespecially since you never considered faithfulness a virtue yourself, even when we were married.

Ben faltered, unsure of how to answer. His outstretched hand fell limply. For a moment, confusion flickered in his eyeshe clearly hadnt expected such a direct, level response.

People bustled paststaff, visitors, courier boys. Some glanced curiously, others made a point of ignoring them. For Ben and Claire, though, the world had narrowed down to the space between them, thick with unsaid accusations and old pains.

You you just he spluttered, but Claire cut him off.

Lets not make this into a drama, Ben, she said, a little less hard but no less definite. If you want to talk, we can do it quietly. But not herenot like this.

A drama? Ill show you drama!

Ben shouted so loudly his words echoed in the spacious lobby. His face flushed red, veins standing out on his neck, fists opening and closing with tension. He alternated between stepping forward and back, as though wrestling with himself.

I wont let my daughter live under the same roof as some random man! he yelled, oblivious to everyone watching. Ill take Emily awayyoull never see her again. You

Sharp, verging on hysterical, his words hung in the air, but Claire only raised an eyebrow, wearing an expression of careful indifference. Take Emily away? Shed like to see him trya British judge would never rule in his favour.

Finished your show? Very theatrical, she remarked, her tone calm, even mocking. Straight out of the circus.

Whats going on here, then?

Ben stopped mid-rant and swerved to the source of the new voice. At the doors stood a man in a stylish navy suit. His posture was confidently relaxed, his eyes calm and watchful. The guards, previously tensed, straightened unconsciouslyclearly, this was someone important within the company.

Nothing for you to worry about, Ben snapped, shooting him an irritated glance. His face mottled, his voice barely concealing dislike. This is private. Not your concern.

The man took his time to answer. He strolled forward, stopping just far enough away to see them both. A slight smile played at his lipsonly annoying Ben more.

Private business is for when you talk in private with your wife, he observed, his tone reasonable. But when youre shouting across a public office, it becomes everyones business.

Claire stayed silent, sensing the tension rise palpably. She hadnt expected her managing director, Richard Allen, to intervene, but somehow his calm confidence interrupted Bens cycle of insults.

Ben stepped towards him, clearly ready for confrontation, but Richard didnt flinch. His gaze was steady and expressionless, the sort of look that comes from handling more difficult people than Ben.

And who do you think you are, telling me what to do? Ben hissed, struggling for control. Mind your own business!

Richard took a few decisive steps and came to stand beside Claire, gently placing an arm around her waist. It was as much demonstration as it was comfortno room for misunderstanding.

Who am I? he said quietly, but the cold resolve in his voice made Ben take an involuntary step back. Im the man who makes Claire happy. If you shout at my partner again, I wont let you off with a warning. If you try to use your daughter as a bargaining chip Well, I think you understand me.

Ben froze. The anger faded from his face, leaving him pale and uncertain. He darted glances between Richard and Claire, slowly realising hed lost control of the situation. Baffled and at a loss for words, he merely clenched and unclenched his fists.

After standing there in tense silence, he muttered something under his breath and turned abruptly. His walk, once aggressive, was now awkward and stiffthe frustrated march of someone desperately hanging on to his dignity. He looked back before he left the lobby.

Dont expect a penny of child support from me!

Never needed it anyway, Claire called after him, her voice light and relieved. At least Emily wont have to visit her father anymore.

A moment later, Claire became acutely aware of Richards arm still clasped around her waist. That simple, steadfast touch brought on a faint blush. She looked down, a little unsure, and gently pulled away, hoping it seemed natural.

She turned to her unexpected rescuer with a somewhat flustered smile.

Thank you so much, Mr Allen. You have no idea how much you helped just now.

Her voice was genuine, without a hint of artifice. In that moment, she truly felt grateful, not just for intervening in that ugly row, but for his calm, unflappable manner.

Richards smile softened.

Shall we talk this over at lunch? he suggested, offering his hand in invitation.

Claire hesitated, thinking over the offer. Her usual doubts fluttered bywas it too soon, would it seem foolish? But almost immediately she pushed them aside. Richard was courteous and respectful, and she genuinely wanted time to talk with him in peace.

Besides, she was curious: who was he, really, and why had he stepped in so firmly?

Id like that, she said, placing her hand in his.

The contact was unexpectedly comfortingstrong, assuring, but never threatening. Gradually, all the tension that had gripped Claire since Ben arrived began to melt away, replaced by a delicious uncertainty and gentle anticipation.

Later, sitting across from Richard at a little bistro nearby, the conversation grew easier. The warm lighting, soft music, and aroma of freshly baked bread created a comforting backdrop.

As they chatted, she learned her saviour had quietly cared for her for some time. He explained this simply, with no attempt at grandeurjust an honest admission that his feelings had been quietly waiting to be voiced.

I waited a while, he confessed, stirring his coffee absently. You always seemed so focused, so serious I knew you were going through a difficult time after the split. I didnt want to push or come across as intrusive.

Claire listened, letting his words sink in. There was no arrogance or smugness, just sincerity and respect for her space.

And today, seeing that man shout at you Richard frowned. I just couldnt stand by.

She couldnt help but smile. So thats how it was! Shed noticed his glances before, but misread them. Richard genuinely appealed to her, though shed never have dared make the first move.

****************************

Three months after that dramatic scene in the lobby, Claire and Richard were married. It was a gorgeous weddingRichard had seen to every detail, making sure everything was exactly as Claire wished.

Emily was genuinely thrilled for her mum. On the day, she helped Claire get ready, making sure even the last detail of the dress was perfect. When the vows were exchanged, Emily smiled and hugged them both tightly.

Im so happy for you! she whispered, her eyes shining.

That evening, Emily also made something clear: she liked Richard very much, but wasnt ready to call him Dad.

I like you, Richard, she told him, in one of their first quiet evenings as a family. And Im glad Mum has someone. But however he is, Dad is still my dad.

Richard nodded without the slightest trace of offence.

I understand. Thats right, Emily. What matters is that were together.

Ben got an invitation to the weddingmore to make a point than anything else. Claire hesitated at first, but then decided he should know: her life was moving forward, with or without him. She posted the invitation with no covering note, just a card with the date, time, and address.

Of course, Ben didnt turn up. The idea never even crossed his mind; the very thought left him feeling angry and resentful. Instead, he found his solace by reaching for the phone and ringing round mutual friends.

The very next day after the invitation arrived, he was calling an old university mate. His voice was guardedly calm, yet strained.

Can you believe itshe invited me to her wedding! he blurted, not even waiting for a hello. After all we went through!

His friend politely asked what was so upsetting about it. Ben just brushed it off.

How could she? How could she humiliate me like this?

This scene repeated itself for daysBen dialling more and more numbers, each call beginning the same way: a story about the invitation, told with simmering outrage. He waited for someone to agree: Yes, thats appalling.

Many responded noncommittally. Some managed a weak Well, people move on, others simply fell silent, unsure how to reply. With every retelling, Ben couldnt help but notice his indignation sounded less convincing.

He changed tack: Its only been six months! You cant possibly find real love that quicklyits just an attempt to run away. Shes only trying to forget me, you know?

Then hed try another angle: She didnt even give me a chance to fix things! If only wed talked, I could have

He never finished the thought: to win her back, to change, to start again.

Sometimes his complaints veered off script: I did so much for her, and she Not even a thank you. Just left. And took Emily with her!

That line rang hollow. Friends shrugged or gently asked, Shouldnt that be normal? You were married, after all.

Ben would fall silent, annoyed. He realised his anger was achieving nothingno one was calling Claire reckless or heartless. Instead, everyone seemed to think she deserved to move onand that stung him the most.

Eventually, tired of getting nowhere, Ben stopped calling. He sat in his flat, staring at the remains of Claires thingsa hair clip shed forgotten, an old photo album, a couple dresses of Emilys that no longer fitgrappling with the reality that, for better or worse, life moves on. Only he hadnt found his place in it yet.

And so Ben withdrew into silence. Life for Claire, Richard, and Emily moved along gentlysteady, peaceful, filled with little joys: supper together, Sunday walks, cheerful debates over which film theyd watch that eveningClaire, meanwhile, embraced the whirl of her new beginnings. Life with Richard was gentler, lighter; she marvelled at the way warmth and laughter had returned to their small home. Emily thrived, blossoming not only in school but also in this more peaceful, stable world. She and Richard developed their own quiet routines: Friday movie nights, crossword puzzles on rainy Saturdays, the shared habit of slipping notes into each others lunch bagsa tradition Emily had started, scribbling Have a good day! in block letters for both of them.

One Sunday, as the early spring sunlight poured through the kitchen windows, Claire looked around the breakfast tableEmily playfully bartering a piece of toast for Richards extra strawberries, Richard smiling in that easy way shed come to cherishand realised, with a deep sense of gratitude, that they felt not so much like a patched-together family as simply a family. Genuine, if unconventional. Whole.

On that particular morning, Emily fetched a dusty board game from the cupboardone Claire remembered keeping aside for rainy day emergenciesand insisted they play. Laughter echoed through the house as rules were bent and alliances forged; the dog barked excitedly as dice clattered across the tile.

Later, as the game wound down and Richard was crowned (deservedly or not) Champion of the Turner Household, Claire stole a quiet moment for herself in the garden. The air was fragrant with fresh earth and new green shoots. As she sipped her tea, she felt the last remnants of her old anxieties finally let go. She looked back through the kitchen window at her daughter and her husbandher familyand smiled at the beautiful, unpredictable script of her life.

Out in the world, Bens voice grew fainter with each passing week. His indignation faded into the background, a distant, harmless rumble. What mattered now wasnt the story he told about her, but the life she was writing for herselfword by word, day by gentle day.

Emily dashed outside, waving a card in her hand. Mum, Richard! The neighbours want to have us round for tea! she called.

Claire turned, radiant and certain, her heart swelling with the possibilities ahead. She linked arms with Emily and Richard, and together, they stepped out into the sunlight, their laughter risingat lastabove every old sorrow.

And for the very first time in years, Claire realised: she had not only found what she needed. She had become it.
