I Always Thought My Life Was Under Control: A Stable Job, My Own Home, Over Ten Years of Marriage, a…

I’ve always thought my life was firmly in my grasp. Good job, a house of my own, a marriage of over a decade, neighbours I’ve known since before I can remember. What no one knewnot even herwas that I was also living a double life.

For years, Id had affairs. I always tried to brush them off, convincing myself they meant nothingthat as long as I came home, no one got hurt. I never felt exposed. I never truly felt guilt. I existed in that false sense of calm that comes with thinking you know exactly how to play the game without ever losing.

My wife, meanwhile, was quiet. Her life ticked along in perfect orderset routines, friendly hellos to neighbours, a world that, at first glance, was simple and neatly arranged. The man next door was one of those fixtures you see every dayborrowing tools, putting the bins out at the same time, a wave here and there. I never once considered him any kind of threat. I never suspected hed get involved where he shouldnt.

I would come and go, travel for work, and never doubted that everything at home was just as Id left it.

Everything unravelled the day our neighbourhood had a string of burglaries. The council asked everyone to check their CCTV. Out of curiosity, I decided to review ours as well. I wasnt hunting for anything specificjust wanted to see if anything untoward had happened. I flicked through the footage, back and forth.

And then I saw something I hadnt been looking for.

My wife coming in through the garage during hours I wasnt at home. And seconds laterthe neighbour stepping in after her. Not once. Not twice. Several times. Same pattern. Clear evidence. Dates, times, repeat.

I kept watching.

While Id been telling myself I had everything under control, shed been living her own double life. The difference was, the pain I felt was absolutely shattering. It wasnt like when I lost my fatherthat deep, sorrowful ache. This was something else.

It was shame.
Humiliation.

It was as though my dignity was trapped there on those recordings.

I confronted her. I showed her the dates, the footage, the times. She didnt deny it. She told me it had started when Id become distant, that she felt lonely, and that one thing had led to another. She didnt immediately apologise. She just asked me not to judge her.

And thats when I saw the most brutal irony
I had no moral right to judge her.

Id cheated too.
Id lied as well.

But it didnt make the pain any smaller.

The worst part wasnt the affair itself.
The worst was realising that, all the while I thought I was playing this game solo, we were both living the same lieunder the same roof, with the same boldness.

I felt powerful, thinking mine was hidden.
Turns out, I was simply foolish.

My pride was wounded.
My self-image was shattered.
What pained me most was discovering I was the last to know what was happening in my own home.

I have no idea what will become of our marriage now. Im not writing this to justify myself or to blame her. I just know there are kinds of pain that are unlike anything else youve ever felt before.

Should I forgive her?
She still doesnt know Ive been unfaithful too.
