I Always Thought My Life Was Under Control: A Steady Job, Our Own Home, Over Ten Years of Marriage, …

You know, I always thought I had a pretty firm grip on my life. Decent job, my own place, married for well over a decade, neighbours Ive known since I was a lad. But the truth no one knew not even her was that I was living a double life.

Id been having affairs for ages. I brushed them off, telling myself they meant nothing. As long as I came home, no one got hurt, right? I never felt Id been caught out. Never felt a trace of real guilt. I carried on, kidding myself I could juggle it all and never get burnt.

My wife, Emma, always had this quiet way about her. Her life ticked along like clockwork routines, a quick smile and a wave to the neighbours, everything in its place. Our next door neighbour was the sort you bump into every day lend a lawnmower, dump the bins out at the same time, exchange the odd nod. Never once did I see him as a threat. Never crossed my mind hed step over a line.

I was in and out, away with work a fair bit, always imagining the house looked exactly as I left it by the time I got home.

But everything fell apart the day there was a spate of burglaries in our area. The neighbourhood watch wanted us to check our CCTV. Out of pure curiosity, I decided to have a little look at ours. Wasnt after anything in particular just nosing around to see if there was anything off. Skipped through the footage. Forwards, backwards.

And then I saw something I never even thought to look for.

There was Emma coming in through the garage door while I was away. And not long after in comes our neighbour, following her in. Not just once. Not twice. Time after time. Different dates, different hours. Clear as day. A pattern.

I kept watching.

While Id been fooling myself that I was the only one running around behind the scenes, shed been living her own version of it. The difference was, the pain I felt in that moment was like nothing Id known. It wasnt like when I lost my dad that heavy, deep sadness. This was different.

This was shame.
This was humiliation.

I could feel my pride being pinned down in those clips.

I confronted her. Laid out the dates, the videos, the times. She didnt deny a thing. She told me it started when Id become distant, said she felt lonely, that one thing led to another. No apology straight off. Just asked me not to judge her.

And thats when it hit me, the bitter twist of it all:
I had no moral ground to stand on.

Id cheated too.
Id lied too.

Didnt make it hurt any less.

The worst part wasnt the affair itself.
The worst part was realising that, the whole time I thought it was my game alone, there we were both of us, acting out the same lie, right under the same roof, with the same boldness.

I always thought I was clever, keeping my secrets.
Turns out, I was just blind.

It battered my ego.
It battered how I see myself.
It stung to be the last one to know what was happening in my own home.

I dont know whats going to happen to our marriage from here. Im not telling you this to make excuses or paint her the villain. I just know theres a kind of pain thats completely new nothing else quite compares.

Should I forgive her?
She still has no idea I ever cheated on her too.
