I Am Not a Nanny or a Maid

I’m 62 years old, living in Manchester, and I’ve just faced a situation that broke my heart. My daughter, Emily, and her husband, James, have decided I must dedicate my life to looking after their daughter, my granddaughter Sophie. I’ve always tried to be a good grandmother, but now my patience has run out. I refused to be their unpaid nanny, and it caused an uproar. I’m not a babysitter or a servant—I have a right to my own life too!

When Emily had Sophie, I rushed to help in every way I could. I babysat, took her for walks, fed her, washed her clothes—anything to give my daughter a break. I know how hard it is to be a new mum, and I wanted to support my family. But over time, my help became expected, as if it were my duty. Emily and James started acting like I was their personal nanny. They signed up for gym memberships, went to evening classes, met friends, and dropped Sophie off with a casual, “Can you watch her? We’ve got plans.” They never cared if I had plans of my own. I’m retired, and damn it, I’ve earned the right to relax and enjoy myself!

Emily would call me midday, demanding I pick Sophie up from nursery because she had a work do and James had gone fishing. I’d be furious, but I’d still go—what else could I do? I love Sophie, but the situation was suffocating. I felt used, as if my time and wishes meant nothing.

Then came the final straw. Emily rang me, thrilled to announce she and James were off to Spain for two weeks. I was happy, thinking Sophie would get a lovely holiday by the sea. But no—they’d decided to leave her with me, without even asking! They just dropped it on me as if I had no say. My blood boiled. I couldn’t stay silent anymore. I told Emily I wouldn’t be their on-call nanny. They chose to have a child—they need to plan their lives around that. Want to travel? Take Sophie with you or find another solution!

I asked why they’d made this decision without consulting me. Emily’s reply stunned me: “You’re retired—it’s not like you’ve got anything else to do.” It felt like a slap. I told her I had plans—a trip to the Lake District with my best friend, finally getting some proper rest. They could either bring Sophie along or figure it out themselves, but I wasn’t their maid!

The call ended in a row. Emily called me a terrible grandmother, and I fought back tears. She doesn’t understand how much it hurts, after everything I’ve done for them. I love Sophie, but I won’t sacrifice my whole life for their convenience. I’m not a nanny or a servant—I’m a woman who deserves happiness too. Now I’m stuck: stand my ground or give in to keep the peace. But one thing’s certain—this can’t go on.
