I Can’t Live with My Spouse’s Grandmother Anymore – It’s Pure Torture!

**Diary Entry**

Living with my husband’s grandmother is nothing short of torture. Some days, I feel like I’m trapped in a museum where every item is off-limits. For months, I’ve begged my husband to move out, even to rented accommodation, because sharing a roof with his nan is pure misery. She won’t let me touch a single thing—not even to dust. Everything’s an “antique” or a “sentimental keepsake.” If I dare rearrange something, she clutches her chest, claims her blood pressure’s shot up, and within half an hour, the whole family knows because she’s phoned them all, painting us as ungrateful wretches.

Before we married, we took out a mortgage on a flat. Our parents gifted us a generous sum for the wedding, and I was over the moon—finally, a place of our own where I’d be the one in charge. We both worked, managed the repayments, and all was well… until I found out I was pregnant. A complete shock—I’d been on the pill. At first, I was horrified, even considered termination, but my husband and parents all insisted, “Absolutely not!”

I kept working until the birth, and we scraped by. But after our daughter Emily arrived, everything fell apart. We were down to one income. My husband took on extra jobs, anything to keep us afloat. Moving back with my parents wasn’t an option—their place was cramped—and his parents already housed his younger brother and wife.

Then his nan stepped in. She offered to let us stay with her—three bedrooms, plenty of space. I hardly knew her, but she seemed kind enough. We agreed, rented out our flat, and financially, things eased… but emotionally, it’s been hell.

At first, it was bearable. Then the nightmare began. In her house, nothing can be touched. Not a thing. Not even by Emily! If our daughter reaches for something or crawls where she shouldn’t, Nan gasps like she’s having a heart attack and accuses me of letting Emily “wreck her treasures” on purpose. When my husband gets home, she performs an Oscar-worthy scene: I’m a neglectful mother, disrespectful, deliberately provoking her. And him? He just shrugs, acts like it’s normal. For him, maybe it is. But I’m at breaking point.

I’ve begged him: Let’s move back to our flat. Even if money’s tight, even if we scrape by, at least we’ll be free of this madness. He tells me to hang on—once my maternity leave ends, we’ll go. But how am I supposed to last that long?

I suggested swapping roles—he stays home, I’ll work. Let him endure a day with “sweet old Nan.” He refused. So I gave him an ultimatum: If we don’t move next month, I’m taking Emily to my parents’ in Manchester. He went quiet. Now I’m waiting—not for words, but action. Because I can’t take another day of this.

**Lesson learned:** Family kindness sometimes comes with chains—and sanity has its price.
