Diary Entry

As I sit here in the quiet aftermath, I feel compelled to write down the events of my daya day that changed everything. My story is perhaps not unique, but the pain feels sharp and personal and somehow, writing makes it easier to face.

My name is Emily Carter, and I’ve spent years living under the unwavering control of my husband, Richard. Richard is a man of strong opinions and expectations. From the very beginning, he assumed the role of the family patriarch, making all the big decisions and rarely entertaining compromise. His word was law, and the idea of bending or changing his mind is simply out of the question.

Before we married, I was aware Richard liked things his way. Ours was an arrangement orchestrated by our families, as is often the tradition in some circles here. At the time, I thought his decisiveness would give us stability. I trusted him, as I always try to give people the benefit of the doubt. But my trust quickly became submission. Instead of a loving partnership, I felt more like a servant, not a wife. Richard supplies everything we need, but he expects me to stay home, look after the house, and keep everything immaculate. Our home must be spotless, the meals perfect, everything served with care.

He demanded that I prove my devotion by giving him a son. Despite countless attempts, I never conceived. My health was finecountless doctors confirmed ityet the results never changed. Eventually, I lost hope.

Then, this morning, everything changed. It began as a typical day: Richard left for work, unhappy as usual, and I started with my chores. Out of habit, I took a pregnancy test, though I expected nothing. This time, there it wasthose two lines, promising a new life. My heart soared, and all I could think was, “My child will be the happiest in the world.” I quickly dressed, eager to share the news and finally please Richard.

I didnt ring my mother. Telling Richard came first. I hopped in a taxi to his office, determined to surprise him. When I arrived, his secretary wasnt at her desk. I moved through the empty hallway and opened Richards door, imagining his joy.

But I found something else entirely. His secretarySarah, half-dressedwas perched on Richards desk. There was no denying what they were doing.

Stunned, I managed a weak, Sorry to interrupt, before fleeing the room. I called another taxi and made my way to my parents home. I couldnt be sure they would understand, but I needed them.

My mother wept with happiness about the pregnancy but mourned the betrayal, claiming the childs happiness was gone. My father was lividmore at Richard than anyone. And if Richard insisted I imagined the affair, I had no evidence to prove otherwise. Without proof, I am trappedunable even to file for divorce. This feels like a cruel game.

I am doing my best to remain calm, for my babys sake. But what sort of future is in store for us?

Lesson Learned

Through all of this, I have come to realise that strictness and tradition do not always keep families safe or happy. Advice in these situations is hard to give, and when customs are rooted in deep beliefs, it becomes harder still for women like me to shape our own lives. I am not to blame for what happened, and that is important to remember. The key is not to give up hope or lose faith in happier days ahead. If my story resonates with anyone else, perhaps my experience can help you. If you have wisdom to share, I’d be grateful to hear it.
