I Fell for Someone Else, But I Have a Child and a Terrifying Secret

When I was just 26, I thought my life was settled. I had a partner whom I’d been living with for three years, and a little boy—cheeky and full of energy—who had just turned two. We weren’t married, but we lived as a family—sharing one home, one bed, and the same responsibilities. I dreamed of having a second child and of a quiet happiness filled with children’s laughter and the smell of pancakes in the morning. Yet, life doesn’t always follow the plan you set out…

A few months after my son’s birth, I found out I was pregnant again, quite by accident. Despite my fears, I was thrilled—surely this was a blessing. But my joy was short-lived. After my first C-section, the doctors said another pregnancy was risky. They were blunt: if I decided to have the baby, I might not survive. One obstetrician, the most straightforward among them, met my gaze and said, “You can keep the baby but risk not coming home.” So, I chose a termination.

Recovering from the procedure was tough, not so much physically, but emotionally. Inside, I felt burnt out. The father of my child offered neither sympathy nor support. He didn’t ask a single question. His response was merely, “Well, that’s how it is,” as if we were discussing buying a new fridge rather than matters of life and death. That’s when I realized: I was alone in this. Completely alone.

In the evenings, I began logging into chat rooms. Not to flirt, but to distract myself, to feel alive and needed, even just a little. Initially, it was just meaningless chatter, obligatory compliments, and some inappropriate innuendos—everything that made me want to log out immediately. But one night around midnight, a stranger reached out. His words were warm and straightforward, free of vulgarity, simply sincere. I lingered in the chat longer than usual. He asked if I used Facebook. Initially, I refused—I wasn’t ready to open up to a stranger. But he persisted gently, without pressure, convincing me he was interested in my mind, not my body.

The next morning, I told him I’d be passing through his town on a brief tour. Though he was at work, he promised to meet me for at least five minutes. And he did. He stepped out of his car, smiled, hugged me like an old friend, and left. No insinuations, no questions, no expectations. Yet, his glance lingered in my mind.

Back home that evening, I received a message from him. Our chat became daily, as though we had known each other forever. A week later, we met again. This time, it wasn’t for just five minutes. This time, we stayed together. It happened, and I thought: that’s it. As usual, the man got what he wanted, and he would vanish. But the next day, he reached out. He suggested meeting up again. He said he wanted to see me, to simply be around. We booked a hotel. I couldn’t bring him to the place I shared with my son’s father.

Two weeks have passed since, and I can feel myself falling in love. Truly. My heart races wildly when he calls. I smile like a schoolgirl when I hear his voice. I want everything with him: morning coffee, road trips, late-night talks. I’ve found the desire to live again.

But now I’m terrified. What if he genuinely falls for me? What if one day he wants to start a family with me, have children? How can I tell him that I can’t be a mother again? That the doctors warned me it would be life-threatening?

I’m scared of confessing. I don’t want to lose what has just begun. I don’t want to be alone again. I’m not sure he’ll understand. Men often want heirs. They want the woman they love to give them a son or a daughter. But I can’t…

Sometimes I think—maybe it’s better to leave now? Before it gets too late. Before I dive headfirst into these feelings. But then he sends a voice message saying simply, “Good morning, beautiful,” and all my resolutions crumble like a house of cards.

What should I do? How do I tell the man I’m starting to love that I can’t give him a child? Is it worth fearing the truth if my heart has already chosen?
