I gave my daughter a flat as a wedding gift. Only later did I realise what a terrible mistake Id made.
I had a wonderful wifebeautiful, loving, clever. We spent twenty-three years together, the best years of my life. But not long ago, a cruel illness took her from me. Wed raised our daughter, Emily, together.
While my wife was still alive, she suggested buying a second flat to rent out for extra income. My pension was barely enough, but she insisted that renting it would keep money trickling in, and if times got hard, we could always sell. Propertys always a safe bet. Emily was grown now, perfectly capable of managing her own living situation.
When Emily got engaged to her boyfriend, I gave them the second flat as a wedding present so they wouldnt have to rent. But I soon regretted it deeply. Id always thought my daughter had a good head on her shouldersuntil she did this.
The moment I signed the flat over to her, she sold it straightaway and bought a brand-new Mercedes with the money.
“Where are you going to live, Emily?” I asked.
“Oh, Dad, well easily save up for a new place, and for now, well just rent. Tom and I have always dreamed of having our own car. Weve still got a few thousand left, so were flying to Spainweve earned a proper holiday.”
Saying I was shocked would be an understatement. Did that car last them long? Not a chance. Three months later, my son-in-law crashed it, turning it into scrap. At least Emily wasnt hurt. Then she found out Tom had been seeing another woman and left him.
With no husband, no flat, and no car left, Emily had no choice but to move back in with me.
