I Just Found Out I Have Cancer – My World Has Turned Upside Down

**Diary Entry 12th March**

This morning started like any other, ticking off tasks for the wedding. Only two weeks to go, and I still needed to finalise the menu with the caterers. The phone rang as I sipped my tea.

“Miss Thompson? Its Dr. Whitmore. I need you to come in today to discuss your test results.”

His tone was offtoo serious. My heart raced.

“Cant you tell me over the phone?”

“Id rather speak in person.”

I arrived at the surgery with shaking hands. James had offered to come, but Id brushed it off. How wrong I was.

“Take a seat, please.” The doctor avoided my gaze. “The results confirm breast cancer. Weve found a three-centimetre tumour.”

The words hit like punches. Cancer. Me. At 28. Two weeks before my wedding.

“What… what does this mean? Am I going to die?”

“With the right treatment, your chances are very good. But we must act quickly.”

I left in a daze. I had to tell James. Cancel the wedding. Call my parents. My perfect world was crumbling.

That evening, sitting across from James in our flat, the words stuck in my throat.

“What did the doctor say? You look awful.”

“James, I have to tell you something.” I took a deep breath. “I have cancer.”

His face fell. He stood and pulled me into his arms.

“Well get through this together,” he whispered into my hair. “Together.”

“But the wedding… we have to cancel everything. The treatment, the chemo…”

James pulled back, holding my hands.

“Are you mad? If anything, I need to marry you now more than ever.”

“James, you dont know what youre saying. Ill be sick, bald, weak…”

“In sickness and in healthremember? Thats the vow.”

I cried in his arms that night, but for the first time since the diagnosis, I didnt feel entirely lost.

Two weeks later, I walked down the aisle in a blonde wig my sister had picked. The dress hung looseId lost weight from the stressbut James looked at me like I was the most beautiful woman alive.

“Do you take James to be your husband, in sickness and in health?” the vicar asked.

“I do.” My voice was steadier than I expected.

“Do you take Emily to be your wife, in sickness and in health?”

James squeezed my hands. “I doespecially in sickness.”

The church filled with nervous laughter and tears.

That night, on our honeymoon at home (treatment started soon), James helped me remove the wig.

“Know whats most ironic?” I stared at my bald reflection.

“What?”

“I thought cancer ruined our perfect plans.” I turned to him. “But I dont think we couldve had a more honest wedding. More real.”

James smiled, kissing my bare forehead.

“Perfect plans are overrated. Ill take an imperfect life with you.”

In the end, cancer didnt destroy our love story. It just gave it a different beginningone that taught us, from day one, true love isnt about the easy moments. Its about choosing each other when nothings easy.

**Lesson learned: The strongest vows are tested not in joy, but in struggle.**
