I Pushed My Son to Divorce His Wife—And Now I Deeply Regret It…

You wont believe what my neighbour, Margaret, was ranting about yesterday as we bumped into each other on the stairs: “My daughter-in-law dropped little Imogen off again for the weekendhonestly, I cant get the child to eat a proper meal! She looks at me and says, ‘Mummy says princesses dont eat too much!’ Takes two bites and just stops. Honestly, shes gone so thin, I swear she practically glows in the dark shes so pale!”

Thing is, Margaret never took to her son Daniels wife, Sophie, from day one. The moment she met her, she raised an eyebrow because Sophie was a full seven years older than Daniel. And Daniel at that point was basically still a boy, had barely finished his A-levels.

“He hadnt even looked at another girl before her!” Margaret huffed. “Its hardly surprising he fell head over heelsshe swept him off his feet with all her experience!”

But Sophie was striking. Always put together, smartly dressed, keeping herself in shape, sailing ahead in her career. Frankly, I thought it was obvious why Daniel found her irresistiblelike they say, men are visual creatures, and Sophie was certainly something to look at.

She followed a strict diet, always eating healthy, and naturally she raised Imogen the same waysmall portions, never overeating, always thinking about what they put in their bodies.

Within just a few months of seeing each other, Sophie got pregnant. Maybe it was just bad timing, maybe she was keen to settle down, maybe she just wanted to get under her future mother-in-laws skin. Who really knows? Point is, Daniel was adamant about marrying hereven though hed just turned 18, and she was already 25.

So Daniel went off to college, working part-time to help support them, since they moved straight out into their own little rented flat, later buying a tiny bedsit. They were happy, but Margaret never let up. Constantly picking at Sophie: her cooking, her ironing, the way she dressed Imogen. Honestly, I dont think Margaret said a kind word about her daughter-in-law the entire time.

Eventually, Sophie pretty much cut tiesand started doing everything on her own: taking Imogen to nursery, gymnastics, and chess club. And she barely had time to breathe herselfbetween work and dashing from one thing to another, squeezing in a session at the gym, an appointment at the salon. She was barely ever home.

Daniel would get in and the house would feel empty. Imogen was always at an after-school activity; Sophie was either picking her up or tied up elsewhere.

One night, theres a knock on the doorSarah from next door, a 38-year-old widow with two teenagers, needed help with a leaking tap in the shared kitchen of the bedsit block. Daniels good with his hands, so he fixed it while Sarah whipped up dinnerspaghetti and meatballs. She thanked him with a plate, and Daniel was more than happy to accept, since Sophie never really had the chance to cook lately.

From then on, Sarah would invite him round for supper whenever he was on his own. Theyd spend evenings chatting in the communal kitchen over homemade pies and comfort food. One thing led to another… feelings crept in without them even realising it, and suddenly, those cozy evenings became the most important part of their days.

But you know how word gets round in a bedsit. Someone told Sophie what was going on, that Daniel and Sarah were spending time togetherand it definitely wasnt just about fixing taps.

A big row kicked offeveryone in the building knew about it. Sophie, proud as she was, packed his things and chucked him out on the spot.

It was late, nowhere to go but Sarahs, and she opened the door without hesitation.

Imogen was six, Daniel 25, Sophie 32, and Sarah 39 at the time.

When Margaret, my neighbour, learned her son had left his wife and moved in with a woman not only with two kids of her own but 14 years older than him, she went oddly quiet. Which was strange, since shed spent years griping that Sophie was too old for Danielyet now, nothing but acceptance. Maybe it finally dawned on her that shed played a part in the whole mess.

This all happened about fifteen years ago. Since then, Daniel and Sarah have stayed togethernever had children of their own, but theyre as happy as anything. Daniel is now 40, Sarahs 54, and Margaret welcomes them home without so much as a cross word. Peaceful, happy, sereneits really nice to see, and Daniel finally seems truly content.

What do you reckonis it possible to be happy if the womans the older one? I honestly think, in the end, its all about the people themselves, not the numbers.
