I Told My Fiancé We Live in a Rented Flat, but the Truth is We’re Actually Living in My Place.

I told my fiancé, Thomas, that we were living in a rented flat, even though the flat was actually mine.

I grew up in a household with only my mother and my grandmother. My father left my mother when I was young and never showed any interest in me, so I never had a male role model. Raised by women, I learned to be strong and selfreliant, and they taught me that lesson well. I worked hard, studied hard, and by the time I was twentyseven I had saved enough to buy my own flat with my own money. That achievement brought up a new dilemma: how should I handle a partnership when I already owned a home?

I dated a few men, and as soon as they learned I owned a flat they stopped seeing me as a girl or a woman and started viewing me as a financial windfall, a solution to their money problems. That wasnt satisfying. I wanted to be loved for who I am, not for what I possess.

When I met Thomas and we began seeing each other, he came over for a visit. I told him I was renting a flat because I wanted to see how he would treat me, whether we could build something together when neither of us owned anything. Thomas replied that not having a place of his own wasnt an issue; he would work hard and save so that one day we could buy a house where we could live together. I liked his honesty. For the next two years we lived together, and Thomas truly put aside his earnings, saving whatever he could.

Now the wedding is approaching. After were married, Thomas plans to buy a house for us, and Im plagued by guilt. All this time Ive been taking the rent money from him while pretending it was my own expense. Should I tell him the truth now?

My grandmother and my mother say theres no need to make a confession. They argue that its wise for me to keep my flat, and that a husband should provide a home for his wife. But how can a marriage begin on a foundation of deceit?

The truth Ive learned is that any relationship built on honesty stands firm, while one built on lies crumbles under the weight of its own secrets. Integrity, not convenience, is the true basis for a lasting partnership.
