I Took Three Cutlets, Husband Fumed and Said I Need to Lose Weight

I piled three meatballs on my plate—my husband blew up at me, saying I needed to lose weight.

Six years into our marriage, I’ve had three kids. Our eldest, Oliver, is five, our daughter Emily is three, and the youngest, Jack, is just six months old. My name’s Lucy, I’m thirty-six. I always wanted a big family, and on paper, I’ve got it—but lately, I feel like I’m disappearing.

James and I met when I was nearly thirty. All my mates were already married, chatting about school runs and mortgages, while I was stuck in the same old routine—work, home, work. Then he turned up—tall, confident, ex-rugby player, now a department manager. Never thought he’d look twice at me. But he kept asking me out, remembered little things I liked. When he introduced me to his mum, I knew it was serious.

She was lovely—took to me straight away, called me “love” and nudged James to propose. We got married, and I was over the moon. Nine months later, Oliver arrived, and I went on maternity leave. Then Emily, then Jack. Never went back to work. My whole world is the kids and the house.

Oliver does football and art club, Emily’s doing home learning with me. I reckon I’m a good mum. But there’s one problem—I’ve put on weight. A lot. I’m about twelve and a half stone now, when I used to be under eight. Back then, I’d hit the gym twice a week. Now, with three little ones, finding time for myself is impossible.

Twice I’ve tried doing workouts at home—barely start before someone’s thirsty, needs the loo, or just wants cuddles. Some days, just dragging myself out of bed feels like a win, let alone exercise.

James used to tease me—call me his “curvy girl,” his “little teddy bear.” Almost seemed to like it. But then… he stopped. Just stared, sighed. Then the comments started.

Last week, we sat down for dinner. I put three small meatballs on my plate—I was starving, hadn’t eaten since breakfast. Next thing, he snatched those two straight off my plate, dumped them back in the pan, and said, icy as anything,

“You need to lose weight. Have you *seen* yourself?”

I froze. Then he added,

“If I fall for someone else, it’s on you. I need a woman I’m proud to be with. And you… well, look at you.”

Felt like a slap. I just stared. Kept thinking, *Maybe he’s right. I’ve let myself go. I’m unattractive. Exhausted. Boring.*

I’d love a salon day, a massage, even just a coffee out. But there’s no time or money. Everything goes on the kids, bills, rent, James’ suits—he’s a manager, has to look sharp. We help his mum too—her pension’s tiny. Nothing left for me.

Sometimes I’m in a dressing room, crying because nothing fits right. I feel ugly. Unwanted.

James earns decently, but it never stretches far. And I’ve got no income—just the house, the kids. I’m trapped: no time to work, no energy to break free.

I’m terrified he’ll leave. I see how he looks at other women—slim, polished, carefree. I try, honest. But I can’t be “perfect.” I’m just cooking, cleaning, wiping noses and bums.

Sometimes I think if it weren’t for his mum, he’d have packed his bags ages ago. She always says, “James, you’ve got a brilliant wife, a wonderful mother. Don’t throw that away over a few pounds.”

I cling to that. Hope someone knocks sense into him. That he’ll remember why he loved me. That this is temporary. That I’ll find myself again. But right now… I’m just scared.

Sometimes I dream I wake up as the old Lucy—slim, happy, sure of herself. Then it’s 3 a.m., Jack’s screaming, and it’s nappies, bottles, mush…

I’m exhausted. I don’t feel like a woman anymore. Just… a function. A mum. A cleaner. A shadow.

And that same thought keeps creeping in: *What if he really does leave?*
