I Was in a Five-Year Long-Distance Relationship and Planning to Propose—Until a Stranger Called to W…

I had been in a relationship with my girlfriend for five years. We lived in different cities because of our jobs, but we talked every day. We had plans. I was seriously considering proposing to her so we could finally put an end to the distance between us. I trusted her completely. She had never given me a real reason to doubt her.

One afternoon, I got a call from an unfamiliar number. Out of curiosity, I picked up. On the other end was a calm, polite man who introduced himself and got straight to the point.

I dont want any trouble. Im calling you because I think you ought to know something.

He explained that he was an IT engineer and had recently started seeing a woman. Nothing serious yetjust a few chats, coffee dates, some light flirting that early stage where youre getting to know someone. She never once mentioned having a partner. Everything seemed above board, until certain details started to not add up.

He talked to a friend, who also happened to be seeing someone new. He mentioned her name. His friend paused, a bit taken aback, and asked to see a photo of her. When he saw the picture, he said something that left him in shock:

Steer clear of this woman right away. Shes had a steady boyfriend for five years.

According to this friend, it wasnt a rumour. It was something many people knewright down to details about me: living in another city, her working there, and that being the reason shed let herself off the leash. Worse still, he said she was seeing another man, also an engineersomeone who didnt much care that she was already in a relationship.

That was when he realised this wasnt just a misunderstanding. She was managing three relationships at the same time: me, this other engineer who knew about me and didnt mind, and him, who had no clue.

He told me that, having put it all together, he felt the right thing was to contact me. If women can stand together, shouldnt men do the same? he said. He wanted no part in the deceit. Hed found my number on social media and thought it more respectful to call rather than send a message. He finished by saying,

If you want proof, just let me know and Ill send it through. Ive nothing to hide.

I said I did. After we hung up, it wasnt long before I received all the evidence: texts, voice notes, photos, even details about dates theyd arranged. The way she spoke to him it was almost exactly the same as how she spoke to me. The same words. The same compliments. The same empty promises.

There was such a pressure on my chest I thought I might pass out. I loved her, and Id started building my life around her. I was ready to leave my city, propose, and begin a shared future from scratch.

I called her and confronted her with everything. She didnt deny it. At first, she tried to play it down. Then, she got angry because someone had meddled. After that, she broke down in tears. She told me she was confused. She didnt know what she wanted. She never thought Id find out like this.

I ended the call.

That’s when a difficult truth struck me: infidelity isnt exclusive to men. There are women who are just as strategic with their dishonesty, carefully juggling several relationships and fully aware of their actions.

Yes, I lost a relationship. But Im grateful to the man who, despite not knowing me, had the decency to warn me. Otherwise, I might have ended up engaged to someone leading a doubleor even triplelife, utterly without remorse.

Sometimes, the hardest truths save us from the greatest heartache. Trust is precious, and its better to face pain today than to build your life on a lie tomorrow.
