I Wasted a Decade Waiting for His Divorce — Only to Realize How Foolish It Was

I was sitting in the park, feeling a weight on my heart. Beside me on the bench was a woman who looked to be in her early forties. We started chatting. Suddenly, as if she had been searching for someone to confide in, she began to share her story. It was a tale of heartache, blind love, and self-destruction. Little did I know that her story would stay with me forever. Now, I share it with you—perhaps it will open someone else’s eyes.

Her name was Emily, and she was just 23 when it all began. Fresh out of university, she had a promising future with a burgeoning career in finance—her first job, her initial achievements. Then, just a few months in, he arrived—David. An unremarkable man, nothing special. Yet, she felt drawn to him. He often sat near her in meetings and tried to be close at office dinners. She liked it. It seemed like something was developing between them.

One day, during an event, he offered to drive a colleague home who lived in the countryside and suggested giving Emily a lift too, to avoid unnecessary gossip. On the way, he admitted he really liked her. The next day, he turned up with a massive bouquet of roses. From that moment, their romance ignited. Every day brought new flowers, dates, stolen glances, touches. Emily was on cloud nine… until that day.

A company event. David walked in—not alone—but with a woman. Unassuming, simple, nothing notable. Colleagues started whispering, “That’s his wife!” Everything crumbled inside Emily. She fled the party, crying until dawn. Yet, the next day, he showed up at her door with tulips, tears in his eyes, full of regret. He said his marriage was long over, that they were only together for the child’s sake, and that his heart was with Emily.

And she believed him again.

He swore he’d file for divorce. Asked her to be patient. Waiting for his son to grow up. Then, until he started school. And then his wife was expecting again. David came to Emily looking guilty, “How can I leave now with another baby on the way?” He begged her to wait once more. She waited. Loved. Believed. Every day, he promised it was “just a little longer,” that everything she dreamed of would come true. But then it was postponed again.

This dragged on for ten years. He came, took her hope, left her loneliness. And she endured. Her mother tried to talk sense into her many times. One day, unable to take it any longer, Emily visited David’s parents. There she saw the supposed “divorced” husband lounging on the couch, hugging his younger son, kissing his wife on the cheek. He didn’t even pretend the family was foreign to him. He simply lived two lives.

Emily was shattered. She was 33. A decade of pain, waiting, and humiliation behind her. Life was passing by while she stood on the sidelines, holding a bouquet of lies.

But Emily’s story didn’t end in tragedy. She found the strength to walk away. Forever. Eventually, she met another man—simple, kind, without grand gestures, but with sincere intentions. At 35, she became a mother for the first time. Today, her son is 17. While her friends are already doting on grandchildren, Emily has no regrets. She says, “I became a mother when I was truly ready for it. I loved someone worthy of my love. And most importantly, I forgave myself for my blindness.”

And David? Still living with that woman. Occasionally calls. Sometimes writes. At times checks her stories on social media. But Emily no longer responds. She knows the value of her years. Of her heart. And of her happiness.
