Im 25 now, and for the past two months Ive been living with my gran. My aunther only surviving daughterpassed away suddenly a couple of months ago. Before that, Gran lived with her. They shared a home, daily rituals, their quiet moments. I used to visit often, but each of us had our own life. Everything shifted when Gran ended up on her own.
Loss isnt something unfamiliar to me. Mum died when I was 19. Since then, absence has been a daily companion. I never knew my dad; theres no backstory, no family secrethe simply wasnt there. So, when my aunt passed away, things became starkly clear: its just Gran and me left now.
The days after the funeral felt surreal. Gran wasnt constantly in tears, but her pain was there in the little thingsmoving a bit more slowly, forgetting to turn off the lights, sitting quietly and staring into space. Originally, I told myself Id stay just for a few days. But those days turned into weeks. One day, as I folded my clothes, I realised I wasnt planning to leave anymore.
Then, inevitably, the opinions started rolling in. There are always people ready to comment.
Some say Im doing the right thinghow could I possibly leave an elderly woman, whos just lost her daughter, entirely alone? Others claim Im wasting my youth, that at 25 I ought to be travelling, going out, meeting someone, living my life. They ask if I find it too hard, if I feel trapped, if Im afraid Ill end up all alone.
The truth is, I dont see it that way.
I work, Im saving up, I keep the house running, I take Gran to her appointments, we cook together, watch TV in the evenings. I dont feel as though Im giving anything up. It feels like Im making a choice. Right now, I dont have a partner, Im not thinking about kids or moving abroad. Im thinking about stability, about being present, about not repeating the cycle of abandonment I know so well.
Gran is the only immediate family I have left. I have no mum, no aunt, no dad. And I dont want her to spend her last years feeling like a burden or an inconvenience. I dont want her eating meals alone or falling asleep every night believing nobody is there for her.
Maybe, in time, life will take me somewhere else. Maybe Ill travel, fall in love, move away. But right now, this is where I belong. Not out of duty, not because of guilt, but simply because I love my gran, and I love who I am when Im with her.
What would you do in my place?
