I’m 25 and Have Been Living with My Nan for Two Months Since My Aunt—Her Only Daughter—Passed Away S…

Im 25, and for the past couple of months, Ive been living with my gran. My aunt her only living daughter passed away quite suddenly two months ago. Up until then, Gran lived with her. They shared a home, shared their daily routines, and found comfort in the quiet together. I used to visit all the time, but we each had our own lives, you know? Everything changed the moment my gran was left on her own.

Loss isnt something new to me. My mum died when I was 19, and since then, Ive sort of learned to live with absence as a part of daily life. Ive never known my dad not like theres a big story or a secret behind it, he just wasnt around. So when my aunt died, it dawned on me, clear as day: its just me and Gran now.

Those first days after the funeral were so strange. My gran didnt cry all the time, but you could see the pain in the little things shed get up more slowly, leave the lights on by mistake, just sit there staring into space. I told myself Id stay for a few days. Well, those days just turned into weeks, and then one day, I was putting away my clothes and it hit me I wasnt going anywhere.

Of course, people always have something to say. Some think Im doing the right thing how could I possibly leave my elderly gran, whos just lost her daughter, all alone? Others reckon Im wasting my youth, that at 25 I should be travelling, going out, dating, living life. They ask if its too much, if I feel trapped, if Im scared Ill end up alone later.

Honestly, I dont see it that way at all.

Im working, saving a bit, keeping the house running, taking Gran to her doctors appointments, we cook together, and in the evenings well watch telly. I dont feel like Im missing out or giving something up; it just feels like a choice Im making. Right now, Im not in a relationship, I’m not really thinking about kids or moving abroad. I just want stability, to be present, to avoid repeating that old story of abandonment I know too well.

My gran is the only real family I have left. No mum, no aunt, no dad. I dont want her spending her last years thinking shes a burden, or that shes in the way. I dont want her eating alone night after night, or drifting off to sleep feeling like shes on her own in the world.

Maybe one day my life will head somewhere else maybe Ill travel, meet someone, move out. But for now, this is where Im meant to be. Not out of obligation, or guilt. Just because I love my gran, and honestly, I like myself when Im with her.

What would you do in my situation?
