I am fifty years old and about a year ago, my wife left home with the children. She walked out whilst I was at work, and when I returned, the house was silent and empty.
A few weeks back, I received the official notice: an application for child maintenance. Ever since, the payments are automatically deducted from my wages. I have no choice in it. There’s no negotiation. No excuses, no delaysthe money goes straight out before I even see it.
I wont pretend Ive been a saint. I was unfaithful. More than once. I never really hid it, but neither did I admit to it outright. Shed sometimes accuse me of things, say she knew something was going on, but Id brush her off and tell her she was imagining it.
Truthfully, I had a nasty temper. I would shout. Lose my rag easily. Everything at home was done my way, on my schedule. If I didnt like something, everyone could tell by the tone of my voice. On more than one occasion, I threw things about. I never laid a hand on anyone in the house, but I frightened them, time and time again.
I realisedmuch too latethat my children were actually scared of me. When I came home from work, the house would go quiet. If I spoke too loudly, they’d wander off to their rooms. My wife tiptoed around me, watched every word, did everything to avoid confrontation. All those years, I thought it was respect. Now I see it was just plain fear.
Back then, I didnt care. Felt I was the man of the house, the provider, the one who set the rules and brought home the bacon.
When she left, I felt betrayed. Like she was rebelling against me. And so, in a moment of spite, I made another mistake. I refused to give her any money. Not out of need, but as a sort of punishment.
I honestly thought shed come back. That shed run out of steam. That shed realise she couldnt do without me. I told her that if she wanted money, she should come home. That I wouldnt support anyone who lived away from me.
But she didnt return. She went straight to a solicitor instead. Filed for support and laid everything on the tableall my earnings, the outgoings, the proof. It was sorted out far quicker than I expectedsoon enough a judge ordered the money to come straight from my salary.
Now, every time payday comes around, my pay is smaller. Theres no hiding, no escaping. The moneys gone before I can even touch it.
I have no wife now. My children dont live at home. I see them rarely, and when I do, they keep their distance. They dont say a word to me. Im only ever a visitor. Im not wanted.
Financially, Ive never been more squeezed. Rent, maintenance, debtstheres barely anything left over for myself. Some days Im angry about it. Other times, Im ashamed.
My sister told me I brought it all on myself. And deep down, I cant argue. If theres anything Ive learnt from all this, its that respect isnt given out of fear. Its given to those who deserve it. And I lost mine a long time ago.
