I’m 60 and No Longer Expect Friends or Family in My Home – Why I Choose to Meet Outside and Enjoy My…

I’m 60 years old now. I no longer expect to see friends or family dropping round at my home.

Truth be told, many people who used to be close to me think Im rather stuck-up, but honestly, I couldnt care less about what others have to say about me.

The main reason I stopped inviting people to my house is pure laziness. Keeping up the house just wore me out. I used to have to scrub everything top to bottom, and then put together some sort of spread for the guests. These days, I don’t have the money or the desire for all that effort. If you want to catch up, why not meet at a café for a cup of tea or coffee? Why does everyone have to invade my living room?

Another reason is just the negative atmosphere. Not every guest turns up with good intentions. Ive no need for other peoples troubles muddying up my day. After every visit, Id be left feeling drained and downcast. I couldnt stand sacrificing my own peace of mind anymore. Since I stopped opening my door to everyone, I no longer have nightmares or lie awake all night.

Since I retired, Ive found myself easily bored at home. I want to get out, explore new places, and shake off the cobwebs. Theres no point in grumbling while dragging everyone round to my flat. After they leave, its me whos left with the cleaning up, worrying whether I was a decent host or not.

Our town is full of lovely spots and cosy nookstheres no reason these days to always celebrate birthdays or special occasions within four walls. Thats what I want to enjoy now, instead of darting about with a mop and dustcloth from morning to night.

Now, my home is my sanctuary. Theres no one here I dont need. People might say Im a bit of an unfriendly recluse, but I dont see it like that at all.

Is my way of thinking something you can relate to? Ive come to realise that protecting my own comfort and happiness isnt selfish at allits simply a way to look after myself at this stage in my life.
