I’m 60 and Turning 61 in Two Months — It’s Not a Milestone Birthday Like 70 or 80, But It’s Importan…

I am 60, and in two months, I’ll turn 61. Its not a milestone birthday, not 70 or 80, but it feels important to me. I want to celebrate it properly. Not just a hastily bought cake or a quick lunch in passing, but an actual, well-organised party: proper dinner, lovely tables, decorated chairs, waiters, gentle music. Something that will help me feel alive, appreciated, grateful for everything Ive experienced.

The trouble is, my children dont agree.

I have two grown-up sons. Both of them live with me along with their partners and their children. The house is always packed: noise, the television is constantly on, kids dashing around, conversations and the odd argument. Of course I love them but I dont have any quiet moments anymore. Im never alone. Not ever.

They both work, but the reality is, I cover most of the expenses. I have my pension, the money my late husband left me, and a small business I still run. I pay the bills, do the shopping, pay for repairs, and offer what starts as temporary help but ends up becoming a regular thing.

Ive never minded helping.

What bothers me now is that they seem to make decisions for me.

When I told them I wanted to hold a celebration, they immediately said it was a waste of money. That at my age, theres no point spending on fancy tables, food, and waiters. That the money would be better off going to them for investments, needs, something useful. They spoke to me as if I was being irresponsible with my own money.

I tried to explain I wasnt borrowing anything, and I had been planning this for months. But they didnt listen. They kept insisting it was an unnecessary expense.

And then one of them said,
Mum, this isnt for you anymore.

That sentence stung much more than I expected.

It made me start thinking about things Ive never dared to say out loud. That sometimes Id like to have my own house to myself. That I miss waking up to silence. That I wish I could come home without there being a crowd in the living room. That I want to make my own decisions without having to justify myself.

Ive even considered telling them to look for their own place not out of malice, but because I feel Ive done my part.

But then Im plagued with guilt.
Im frightened of sounding selfish.
I dont want to argue. Im not looking to throw anyone out over a night. I just want to know if Im wrong for wanting to celebrate. For wanting a bit of peace now and then. For wishing my money could sometimes be spent on me.

Im writing because I honestly dont know what to do whether to stand my ground, or give in once again. Whether to have my party even though they dont approve.

What do you think is it so wrong of me to want to celebrate my birthday the way I want, and to have my home and money not treated as a committee decision?
