I’m Turning 61 Soon—It’s Not a Big Landmark Like 70 or 80, But This Birthday Matters to Me. I Want t…

I am sixty years old, and in just two months, Ill be sixty-one. It isnt a landmark birthday, not the grandness of seventy or eighty, but it matters to me. I want to celebrate. Not with a hastily bought supermarket cake or an as you please lunch, but with a true, well-arranged partydinner, beautiful tables, chairs tied with ribbons, waiters, gentle music floating in the background. Something to make me feel alive, cherished, grateful for all Ive been through.

But my children dont agree.

I have two grown sons. They both still live at homealong with their partners, and their children. The house always brims with constant noise: television humming, children darting about, endless chatter, bickering in different corners. I do love them but I never have a moments peace. Theres never solitude. Not even for a breath.

They have jobs, but truthfully, I shoulder almost all the expenses. I live on my pension, the money my late husband left, and a small business I still keep ticking over. I pay the bills, restock the fridge, cover repairs, and, quite often, hand out just for now help that seems to become forever help.

It never troubled me, this helping.

What unsettles me now is how theyve taken up decision-making for me.

When I told them I wanted a birthday party, they announced it was a waste of money. That nobody my age should be spending pounds on tables and food and waiters. They insisted it would be better if I gave the money to themfor investments, for their needs, for something sensible. They spoke to me as if I were reckless with whats rightfully mine.

I tried explainingno loans, no last-minute whims. Ive been dreaming of this for months. But they wouldnt hear it. They pressed on, saying it was all an unnecessary luxury.

And then one of them looked at me and said,
Mum, this isnt about you anymore.

That stung deeper than I expected.

I began to ponder things Id never dared say aloud. How sometimes I crave being alone in my own house. How I miss waking up to silence. That Id like to come in and find the sitting room empty, not teeming with someones noise. How I wish to make decisions without needing justification.

Ive even thought of gently suggesting they find their own placenot out of malice, but because it feels like Ive fulfilled my end of things.

Then, guilt gnaws at me.

Im afraid of sounding selfish.

I dont want confrontation. I dont want to throw anyone out in a fit of pique. I just wish to know: am I wrong for wanting this celebration? For yearning for quiet, sometimes? For wanting my money to be spent, at least in part, on me?

I write because Im uncertain should I stand my ground, or give in once more? Should I go ahead with the party, even if they disapprove?

Tell meam I wrong for wanting to mark my birthday in my own way, and for longing that my home and my money be something more than a committees decision?
