**Diary Entry – 14th March**
Last night was supposed to be ordinary. Emma and I were fast asleep in our bedroom, the children—Oliver, six, and little Matilda, just a year old—long settled in their rooms. Silence filled the house, the kind that usually promises peace.
Then, at half past three, our Labrador, Max, did something he’s never done before. He burst into our room, paws skidding on the hardwood, and leaped onto the bed. Before I could scold him, he planted his front legs on Emma’s chest and let out a low, urgent bark. My heart lurched. Max is eight, well-trained, never disobedient. This wasn’t just odd—it was frightening.
The room was dim, but I saw the tension in his body. Then I heard it—the faintest creak from the hallway. Realisation hit me like ice water. Max wasn’t misbehaving; he was *warning* us. He positioned himself between us and the door, hackles raised.
I shook Emma awake, pressed a finger to my lips. Edging toward the door, I caught another sound—soft footsteps on the floorboards. My hands shook as I dialled 999.
While we waited, we gathered the children and locked ourselves in the bathroom. Max stayed guard, rigid by the door. The longest seven minutes of my life passed before shouts echoed through the house:
“Police! Stay where you are!”
Two intruders had broken in through the lounge window, convinced the house was an easy target. They hadn’t counted on Max.
He’s a hero now. We bought him the biggest bone we could find and a thick new blanket. These nights, he sleeps by our bedroom door, and neither of us complains.
Some say dogs are just pets. Not ours. He’s family—and our guardian.
