My wife has always been rather shy. Whenever we were with our friends, she kept herself to herselfquiet and modest. She never took the lead in conversation, only joining in when someone asked her directly. My wife never made a scene or caused any drama, and she certainly never got jealous. She paid attention to me, never set any demands, and accepted every present I bought her with gratitude.
You could say our marriage was as close to perfect as you might wish for. We kept no secrets from each other and always sorted out any problems together. Every night after a long day at the office, I came home to a delicious meal, a spotless house, and my wife, Charlotte, greeting me with a warm smile. To be honest, I dont know what more a man could want.
And yet perhaps you can guess whats comingdespite the picture-perfect life, I felt something was missing. The truth is, I was seeking excitement elsewhere. I felt unsatisfied with a particular aspect of our relationshipthe intimacy between us, or rather, the absence of it. It just wasnt enough for me, and foolishly, I decided to have an affair.
Charlotte found out, and that was the end of us.
I moved in with the woman Id fancied myself in love with, and only then did it dawn on me how big a mistake I had made. The flat was always untidy, never a home-cooked meal waiting for me at the end of a hard day, and we hardly even had anything worthwhile to talk about.
It wasnt long before I wanted to go back to Charlotte, but Id left it too late. By that time, shed met someone else.
Its a regret I carry daily. Because of my own foolishness, I let the perfect woman slip through my fingers. If theres anything Ive learnt, its that sometimes, by chasing after what you think youre missing, you lose something truly priceless.
